CardShark Content - Beatdown Bedford Crenshaw (3/7/2006)

I have always liked green. Given that it has only the most reliable of the set’s mechanics to work with, it should make for some decent cards. Let us examine.

Battering Wurm

Bloodthirst 1 (If an opponent was dealt damage this turn, this creature comes into play with a +1/+1 counter on it.) Creatures with power less than Battering Wurm’s power can’t block it.

Limited: B-
Overall: C-
If you play green, you are not used to evaders. I am thinking that R&D is trying out this “power less” mechanic as a replacement for trample in the base set. Even bloodthirsted this card is overpriced.

Why couldn’t it have given trample instead of the faux rampage ability? This is the weakest magemark, but I would probably still play it.

Limited: C
Overall: C
It has a good power/toughness for the cc, so it can be included in decks, but without trample and a way to know what you will be drawing, that extra ability is likely to be a huge drawback. Johnny will like it far more than anyone else.

Crash Landing

Being able to destroy an opposing flyer is great, although this will be in the sideboard. As long as you don’t go over 2 colors in your deck, you should have enough forests to kill most flyers. If you play 3, than you are just using it to get rid of a nuisance, not a problem.

I like seeing landwalk. I would always run this if I got it and am playing green, as in this environment you’ll see plenty of nonbasics. In fact, I like the chances of this card in constructed, especially if equipped.

It would be an absolute fluke to be able to actually use this in Limited. However, it adds a lot to casual decks; Johnny will love this for fun decks and, because of its uniqueness, I rated it this high. Trust me, I didn’t rate it B for its tourney merit.

Limited: C+

I am liking the idea of “auras” instead of “local enchantments” more and more. Given the Magemarks of this set, I like the idea of this card, as it won’t take much to make this a 3/4 PDQ. Still, auras are risky, and some creature destruction doesn’t care if you can regenerate or not.

Very few people play with counterspells in Limited, so you’ll be saving this card, protecting it for your constructed decks, which will greatly love it. Then again, I love anything that screws counterspells.

This was perhaps my MVP at the prerelease. Equipped on a hard to block critter, and this can go far. Plus, you have the emergency option of creating a Wurm. Nice, but the weakness inherit in Auras prevents me from grading it higher.

CONCLUSION:
Green has great filler in this set; drafting green can help make your deck better. However, the lack of definitive bombs means you have to rely on your other colors for knockout blows; green is just your setup.
