CardShark Content - Beatdown Bedford Crenshaw (7/20/2006)

I was originally going to review the red cards with the green and other not-yet-reviewed cards, but I so liked the red I saw I decided to review it on its own, with the traditional grading and then giving awards. The grade scales are a total summary of its Limited, Constructed, and Miscellaneous qualities. Enjoy!

BRAID OF FIRE
Grade A-
Kumano. Instants. Dragons. There are plenty of ways to use the extra mana produced by the Braid in Standard. In other Constructed venues the extra mana can be helpful in paying for various upkeeps. Spikes and Johnnies will both love this card.

s, maybe cost at 1R or RR. This costs 1 more than I hoped, but it has the boon of dealing damage as well. With so many nonbasic lands around, this should be a sideboard card often used.

EARTHEN GOO

Another card that is enhanced by Braid, the Goo’s trample can help deal that extra damage needed to destroy your opponent.

GOBLIN FURRIER

GOBLIN RIMERUNNER
Grade C+
Will WotC please stop with having red creatures give only itself haste for a mana cost, as they are never useful, except occasionally in Limited. Then again, it’s a Goblin on a snowboard, which is why I can’t help but like it, which is why it gets a + to its grade.

GREATER STONE SPIRIT

Clunky to use, but fortunately Braid is around to help. However, only Braid makes it remotely useful.

KARPLUSAN MINOTAUR
Grade B
I like this coin flip, even in constructed. Get the early beatdown, keep a life advantage, and then let the Minotaur get to work in whittling the life away from your opponent, brushing off the damage you yourself get. In environments with Krark’s Thumb, you can really enjoy yourself; not to mention Chance Encounter

KARPLUSAN WOLVERINE

Perhaps Sligh’s best one drop since Tempest. It’s like a red version of first strike, and far better than Laccolith Whelp

LIGHTNING STORM
Grade C
I wish I knew more about this card at the prerelease; I maybe could have used it against my opponent. This is too likely to come back to bite you, but if you have a deck that excels in drawing lands out of your deck and into your hand, this may just be viable. as well, which costs a lot less. Nice looking chick, but useless for Red as it comes too late to really be useful, outside of Limited.

MAGMATIC CORE
Grade C+
Powerful in Limited, it provides another reason for Braid. Of course, combos that include a rare and an uncommon are a bit too unlikely to hope for. It’s reliance on other cards hurts its Constructed possibilities.

ORCISH BLOODPAINTER
Grade D+
It’s quite useful in Limited, but is gaining a point of power worth having to always sac a creature to use a Tim effect? I don’t think so.

RIMESCALE DRAGON
Grade B-
Awesome art, and gives red an ability it usually doesn’t get. It’s a little expensive, but in a Gruul deck with Elves, who knows?

RITE OF FLAME
Grade C
To be good, it’s needed in multiples and early in the game. Few people have luck that good.

, it might just be worth including these in a deck, as it could easily deal enough damage to kill most anything, although you’ll want to save it for the fatties that often give red fits.

STALKING YETI
Grade B
A snowy FTK anyone? It’ll take some working around, but it could well be worth it. Powerful art as well.

Red tends to get the short stick when it comes to hosers. So I have to give credit to one that is actually powerful enough for the sideboard. The only other uncommons worth mentioning are the Goo and Stalking Yeti

Braid and the Serpent are great rares for Spikes. Johnnies will love Braid and Minotaur. Timmies will love the Serpent and Dragon. In a set with a lack of decent rares, Red is 5 for 6 in its rares, and I’m sure some will love Lovisa. So how could I pick the Fury? Because I think the possibility of 3rd turn 2nd attacks are just too strong to ignore.

Man, the awe one gets from that artwork; I hope I can get this in an image for use as a wallpaper. The red artwork in this set is fantastic. The Wolverine and Rimerunner are also quite strong in their artwork.

There are some nice red critters in this set. The Goo, Furrier, Minotaur, Serpent, Dragon, and Yeti of the stalking persuasion are all nice critters in one way or another. However, the Wolverine is just too useful for almost any red critter deck not to use.

would be a #1 in most any other set? The Wolverine is effective, and I hope to see more red critters with this ability.

I think Red owns this set like it hasn’t owned a set since Tempest. Now if only there was a red penguin in here, the set would be the best ever for red. Oh well.

Next week we finish up the reviews, including the champions of Coldsnap! Be there or be square.
