Those Lovable, Expendable Goblins - Benjamin Burnes (11/10/2007)

´´For every wretched Boggart wandering in the open, there are no less than five more skulking in the shadows or hidden in nearby warrens.´´
-Elvish hunting advice.

Tribal is back with full force in the new Lorwyn release. Focusing on the synergy of tribal really appeals to me, I was unfortunate (or extremely fortunate, depending on who I talk to) to have missed the previous Tribal set, so I became giddy with excitement while looking over all the new cards and how they interact with each other.

One race that really stuck out to me was the Boggarts, or Goblins. I've always loved the little creeps, much like an annoying younger brother. He'd always got in underfoot, but if I could convince him to help me, little would remain unbroken in the house from our rampage.

Goblins are small, and they tend to swarm. They might be called Red's version of White Weenie. But unlike White where they tend to have beneficial or protective abilities, goblins love blowing things up. Mogg Fanatic

is a perfect example of that, sure he's a 1/1 for one, but he'll fling himself at a creature or opponent at your command. Siege-Gang Commander can chuck other goblins and, in a pinch, himself. In Lorwyn, though, Goblins get black as another color, opening up a huge array of great spells.

I will be the first to admit my deckbuilding skills aren't the best, so I won't be building anything today. I will, however, expose some of the brilliant synergy in the new Goblins. If you read my last article, I admitted that I recently got back into Magic, so my experience with cards is pretty much 10th Edition and Lorwyn. I can't say that my ideas are the most concrete, but they have worked well for me so far. I also can't guarantee that this will win you any sort of tournament. In fact, I can guarantee that it won't. But I have found this so much fun to play it doesn't matter if I lose most games. That's the best disclaimer you'll get from me.

Let's go over the ground rules for building a goblin deck: First, Goblins love hitting the dustbin. It's like the ice cream shop to them, they will end up there frequently, sometimes two or more times in a game. Don't get too attached to these creatures by giving them unique names and personalities. Second, Goblins are very fast. Almost all of them cost less than 4 to put out. You will need a solid manabase to keep your horde coming. Third, Goblins are weak, but very numerous, nearly all of your blocking will be chump blocking or gang blocking and then dropping tricks for removal. You should be Alpha Striking (or leaving enough behind for blocking) nearly every turn to put the pressure on the opponent to react or lose.

Now, going over all these rules, one of the most ridiculous cards from Lorwyn is Boggart Shenanigans

. Aside from allowing you to yell SHENANIGANS every time you play it (and it being difficult to spell, as I just found out) it allows your cuddly little Goblins to not hit the graveyard in vain. Clocking in as an enchantment for 2R, Shenanigans essentially means that if a Goblin you control goes to the graveyard (or, as I call it in this deck, Goblin Heaven) from play, you can do one damage to target player. Now, this doesn't seem like much, but think about how many goblins get recycled over and over. Unfortunately, Tribal Instants and Sorceries do not count to Shenanigans, it has to be a Goblin permanent that goes to the graveyard. But Mogg Fanatic

absolutely loves Shenanigans, since sacrificing him will now do two damage. Remember, those Shenanigans stack too, doing two or three damage every time a goblin dies compounds quickly. Also, it's a great deterrent from a Wrath effect. Sure you can kill my 7 goblins, but you're going to be hurting from it and I'll be bringing them back next turn. And it dodges enchantment hate as well! Since it's a Goblin you can use any retrieval spell you want.

Shenanigans is the centerpiece of this deck, but you need a solid base of Goblins to revolve around them. I wanted a good amount of burn to finish the opponent off since it gets harder and harder to get through with your little guys late game. I put in Tarfire

. I know this card is ridiculous, but first think of the downsides of it. First, you need to sacrifice a goblin. That's usually no problem since you'll have a bunch, but if you only have one in play, watch out for tricks. Second, your opponent needs to have a creature in play, one that can't be blinked, removed, or sacrificed at a moment's notice. But what a fireworks show, it's pretty much a guaranteed kill on most creatures AND you splatter your opponent for five! The other spell I put in was Empty the Warrens

for a million Goblins… remember, Storm makes copies of the spell, so they would have to counter each instance individually.

There are probably more, but they slip my mind right now. I feel that this deck, while maybe not superior to other ones out there, is simply an absolute blast to play. I feel a little limited with my knowledge of cards and I'm probably forgetting something in a prior set that would really turn this deck around. But I'm only here to offer ideas, I'll let you build the deck since that's part of the fun!
