Black has a few amazingly good cards that make it what it is today. My list focuses mostly on the newer cards, with some exceptions. Anyway, Black has always been an awesome color to play, and these cards are some of the biggest reasons why.

is arguably the best black card ever made. Period. Paying B to get BBB turn 1 gives you a huge leg up over the competition. While it’s banned in both Extended and T2, it still remains a very useful card.

is the type of card that never really dies, because it’s just so useful and efficient at what it does. Not to mention, it’s cheap! How often do you see a common that can blast any nonblack, nonartifact creature for 1B? If you’re playing mono-black, Terror

has saved me a number of times; it’s one of my personal favorites.

Chainer’s Edict

The edicts deserve a place on my list because they get around those tough creatures that can’t be targeted or have protection from black. If you had to compare the two, Chainer’s is better, merely because it has a flashback option (which I rarely use, 5BB is pretty steep) but on the other hand Diabolic Edict

If you’re finding extra slots in your deck, I’d consider running some Chainer’s Edict. Or, if you're looking for a cheaper alternative, check out Diabolic Edict

Night’s Whisper

I never saw this card coming, Fifth Dawn had pretty slim pickings for black and then there was this diamond in the rough. Night’s Whisper gives you awesome card advantage early on, and card advantage wins games. The cost of two life is well worth drawing two cards if you ask me. And just like Terror

, this is a common! I’m surprised that a card this good is only a common.

Night’s Whisper is crazy good for any black deck, and seeing as how cheap they are, picking up a playset should be no trouble at all.

is a turn 2 beatstick that can dish out serious damage. The nice thing about Shades is that they still remain useful later on in the game, as they can become rather large attackers. I don’t know exactly how popular the Nantuko Shade

This is one of those “If you can afford it, play it!” cards. It’s an awesome black creature any way you look at it.

This is probably the greatest mass removal black has to offer right now, there might be others, but none get the job done as well as Mutilate

I was debating whether or not to include this card, but I feel that it can’t go unnoticed. In this age of artifacts and more artifacts, this card is a killer. This card can be a real pain early on, because if you make a deck around sacrificing artifacts, you’re looking at serious damage. If you have more than one in play, it’s going to start hurting even more. I would recommend this card, merely for its ability to damage opponents repeatedly.

So that’s my list, I have probably missed some cards, but these are some of the greatest black cards out there, and if you’re playing black, I’d seriously consider looking into them.
