A Look Forward to Avacyn Restored - Billy Moreau (4/22/2012)

If you read my last article "How to Turn 16 MTGO Tickets into 13 Booster Packs" you would know that I have been having a lot of fun playing 4 pack Innistrad block Sealed. So far I have invested $60 in tickets into playing the 4 pack Sealed events and my totals stand at 87 packs won! What is shocking to know is that out of every 4 pack Sealed event I have played in I have finished 0-3 and 3-0 exactly once each, while finishing 2-1 more than 20 times! I highly recommend this format to everyone! But that's not what this article is about. I would like to talk about the upcoming set Avacyn Restored! And yes I am looking forward to 4 booster Sealed Avacyn Restored events if you were wondering!

Avacyn Restored will be out in 3 weeks from the time I am writing this article. This set is the third set in the Innistrad Block, but it won't be mechanically tied to Innistrad and Dark Ascension. It won't be drafted with them either, it is its own set. Wizards of the Coast has turned the tables recently with blocks, having moved away from the standard large set followed by two smaller sets, both with Zendikar and the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor blocks. While the shifting blocks has more of an impact on Standard, I will examine its effect on Limited.

Limited play has always been challenging in that everyone starts on a level playing field. Some luck does come into play with which bombs you draft or what you get in your Sealed pool. Having Avacyn Restored as a full-sized large set means that instead of the standard 1 pack per draft and 2 per sealed, you will draft 3 Avacyn packs or open up 6 in Sealed events.

The spoiler for Avacyn Restored is not completed yet but we already know of the new mechanics included (and the ones not returning):

No transform cards as well. This can be a good thing as Delver of Secrets

That card would make Undying decks very very difficult to beat!

There are two new Mechanics in Avacyn Restored - Miracle and Soulbond.

Miracle cards are cards that are very powerful if you play them for their Miracle cost, which you can only do if they are the first card you have drawn this turn. If they are not played for their Miracle cost they become very expensive to play. To make them much more effective a card like Brainstorm

Miracle, as it seems the Miracle cards draw some of their inspiration from some old goodies.

The other new mechanic is Soulbond, which reminds me a lot of the old ability Banding. Soulbond allows a creature to pair up to another creature either when the Soulbond creature enters play or when it's in play and another creature enters play. This is a Timmy ability. What that means is that in Constructed it will be an ability used by newer or less experienced players to show what they can do. In Limited it will be a powerful ally. Currently there are creatures previewed with the Soulbond ability but there is also a "Soulbond" spell- Joint Assault

, which will see a lot of play in Red Blue decks using the graveyard to flashback spells. The other Planeswalker, Tamiyo, the Moon Sage, will see some play in control decks to stop large threats from attacking. I can see both these planeswalkers finally being financially affordable to all at a high price around $9 each.

We will see an overflow of Angels as well in the set. As a whole the set will not see a lot of play in Constructed, from the 50 or so cards previewed so far, due to being slow, but in Limited make sure you get a bomb or two or else it may be game over sooner rather than later. I will be attending both days of the prerelease so I can watch the Helvault
