CardShark Content - Bob Pitcher (8/23/2004)

My first article about PrisGreen was posted at Card Shark on July 14, and it was written a few days before that. The Mirrodin Block constructed environment has become much more refined since then. My early PrisGreen deck cannot compete in the newer meta-game. Accordingly, the rating for my first article has plummeted. I have still been enjoying PrisGreen, so I felt compelled to write an update for those of you who like to play decks that are a little different from what everyone else is playing.

Other players have adopted a Pristine Angel

, I recommend you look up the green/white/blue version. I tried it, but found the mana base to be rather fragile in a meta-game where Green/Red (Freshmaker) decks are becoming popular.

I chose to use a different deck in recent tournaments but continued to toy with PrisGreen in the casual rooms on MTGO. I believe a proper version of PrisGreen can be a reasonable rogue choice in the current meta-game. I would not recommend pinning your Pro Tour hopes on this deck, but if you want a refreshing change from the popular decks in Mirrodin block, you might enjoy PrisGreen.

Here is how I currently build PrisGreen:

Which cards you chose to side out depends on the exact version of Big Red you are facing. Some versions run more artifacts than others. Veridian Shaman and Tel-Jilad Shamans tend to be weak in this match up, but you shouldn’t automatically pull out all your artifact removal spells. This deck is begging for Wayfarer’s Baubles. I have used them, took them out, then used them again. The problem is that they don’t seem to fit correctly during some match ups. In non-tournament matches, my record with various versions of PrisGreen has grown to 40 wins and 26 losses. Admittedly, I have been up against a lot of (other) sub-par decks. Perhaps some of my opponents may have been weak players - I’m hardly good enough to make that evaluation. Regardless of how competitive those matches were, they were at least entertaining. Winning more than I’m losing helps makes things fun for me, but it’s the casual gaming with a rogue deck that I find most enjoying. PrisGreen offers such entertainment by being somewhat competitive while remaining rogue.
