Mean and Green - Bradley Crouch (8/25/2008)

As I am a one-trick pony player of Magic, that is, a player who likes to play the same deck over and over once a good one is found, there comes a point at which the inevitable happens.

Everyone else gets sick and tired of playing against the blasted thing.

In the case of my beloved Shenanigans deck, people got so sick and tired of it that the word ´´Shenanigans´´ was officially outlawed. Given Shadowmoor has released a slew of new and utterly insane goblins, now is as good a time as any to replace Shenanigans, with a new goblin deck of course!

Unlike the Lorwyn goblins, which thrived in an environment that, if it didn't combo with a tribe, it was probably removal, the Shadowmoor goblins, for the most part, thrive on simply being turned sideways. Moving away from a ´´tribe matters´´ set to a ´´color matters´´ set allows a deck to be much more free in its design than in Lorwyn, which, in my humble opinion, was the most restrictive block in recent memory, forcing a drafter to find that one card to lynch a draft deck or lose. Furthermore, in Lorwyn block constructed, it was incredibly hard to make a block ´´good stuff´´ deck, as the whole tribal idea simply forces a deck to embrace one eighth of the cards in the set to the exclusion of most others. This essential difference between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor means that rather than a goblin deck, the final product will play fast, aggressive, ´´good´´ cards that will probably just end up being mostly goblins out of sheer happenstance. So long as the creatures are all good beats, consistency issues will be largely moot.

At first glance, this seems to be a standard red green aggro deck, albeit a bit lacking in player-targeting burn. As Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block has little to offer in terms of good burn except for Tarfire

to wipe a sizable portion of the board. Against the fae, who are currently the most popular deck at block events, this card essentially allows a one-sided Wrath at three mana (fairies were never known for their toughness). This, in many cases, will allow your creatures to swing into their weakened position.

Furthermore, this deck is capable of many disgustingly fast swings into the opponent, causing turn 4 wins with a variety of hands. Fertile Ground

everything. That being said, given that this deck can win turn 4, the opponent will hopefully be on the clock from the very get go.

As an aside for giggles and posterity, Shenanigans itself has not been idle. Given the addition of Shadowmoor, one of the new monocolor hybrid cards immediately popped out as a fantastic addition for the deck. Since its last iteration, the greatest weakness of Boggart Shenanigans

Regardless, I feel that these decks have something that current constructed formats don't have nearly enough of currently. And by that, I, of course, mean goblins.
