This is an interesting time to play in Type 2 Magic tournaments. It’s been some time since the tournament scene has seen such varied play. Gone are the days of only seeing ‘Tog, Wake, or Madness decks. These days we’ve got Slide, Red Deck Wins, several versions of Affinity and MBC, Zombies, Scepter, and the list only goes on.

As a hardcore casual player, where originality is the name of the game, it’s refreshing to go to Friday Night Magic and see so many decks playing so well. While Affinity is arguably the king of the hill for the moment, even its players saw some losses to more original decks.

At my local tournament last Friday an Affinity player- at 1 life- tapped out to counter a serum tank, since he feared giving his opponent an answer to his imminent win next turn. This only allowed a Triskelion

to come down instead, giving the game to his shrewd opponent. This is just one example of a “lesser” deck coming out on top of the crowd favorite.

So, in the interest of promoting diversity among Magic decks, I present a mostly original creation. This decks borrows some elements from the popular “Moldy Hermit” R-G control deck, but it works quite differently. Rather than slowing the game down, this deck is consistently quick.

The concept here is simple, which works quite well for it. The point is to smash 20 or more damage into the opponent before he or she can get grounded. It’s amazing how a Bird of Paradise or an Ornathompter can go from being overlooked to massive with a Giant Growth

s, and Vigilantes wreck havoc on any enchantment-based combo. The mana curve is smoother than butter.

Affinity is always a concern. Even with the massive anti-artifact theme, you won’t be able to kill everything they put down, nor keep pace. Just pick and choose your targets wisely, and watch out for counterspells.

As for goblins, if you kill the early strikes, the opponent will be thrown off balance. Remember, a Trellis with a Giant Growth

will trade for a Piledriver, no matter how big the driver gets. Goblin Bidding is a bigger problem, but as long as you’ve done enough early damage, fly in for the kill ASAP.

The list of potential match-ups only goes on and on from here, since, as I said, the tournament scene is so varied. Sideboarding is key depending on who you’re expecting to face; that’s why I’ve left it up to you. I do recommend the underrated Wing Snare

Until next time, just remember that originality does more than just keep the game fresh, it can surprise opponents and win games.
