, no dice. I’ll let you know if I ever decide to get back on that idea, but for now, it really hasn’t gotten me anywhere. But, enough about what I’m not talking about.

Every deck is like a story. Oftentimes, in the world of casual games, a Magic deck is first conceived when a player sees or acquires a card and thinks of an interesting interaction with the card. For a tournament-oriented player, a similar process occurs, except with more consideration for the format and current metagame for that format.

This deck is a story.

should either cost less or be a little beefier. A single toughness isn’t going to strike fear into the heart of the opponent, even with a potentially limiting ability like his. So, I suppose I have two questions. First, why during the period after Onslaught

’s ability to seriously hamper any given opponent’s basic game plan (without even mentioning giving the player “going infinite” brain spasms), it will definitely keep you in check as well. Special consideration must be given to the deck to allow for maximum effectiveness. In short, we should have little or no non-creature spells.

But, I protested as I pondered the deck, how does one do away with basic utility spells like Rampant Growth

It was about this time that the deck began to come together in my head. It’s easy to say that I saw the whole invention of the deck from start to finish without complication, but it would also be completely dishonest. The best, most successful decks are the product of careful consideration and deliberation, and this was definitely one tough nut to crack.

So we’ve got creatures with nice effects, and we’re gradually getting rid of the basic utility requirements without hurting the deck. We aren’t done yet, though. We still need to protect those Glowrider

s will produce the same effect sooner and come attached to a body, but the possibly constant drain on your mana supply won’t be appreciated.

Ok, so now we’ve come halfway through the deck, allowing for a safe 24 land count. As a matter of fact, we’ll go ahead and get that out of the way (purists, worry not, the final deck list will have lands separated rather than smack-dab in the middle).

The Port is in there to further screw with your hapless opponent’s math. If he or she has been building up mana trying to get around your Riders, tap their land during their upkeep and secure your lock.

Locks only do so much to keep an opponent down. A truly prepared and flexible opponent will draw an answer, and so far we’ve only been hitting them for 2. It would be pretty easy to give in at this point and throw in a Spiritmonger

This looks very good, if I may say so myself. In theory, once a few Riders are out the only thing keeping you from victory is the opponent’s life total, and these will go a long way toward taking care of that little problem. Now, let’s just add a little more utility to even things out.

, since it fits the theme and will seriously hamper a blue mage’s plans.

Since the main card has rotated out of Standard, this deck has obviously been geared with Extended in mind. Since that this the format of choice for Qualifier tournaments in the coming months, feel free to consider this deck. Do what you will with it, tweak it, tear it apart, and make it yours. Even if not a single card makes its way into your deck, hopefully I’ve inspired you in some way or another.
