CardShark Content - Brian Baker (10/1/2005)

If there's only one tournament I go to, no matter what my schedule looks like or how low my bank account drops, it's the Prerelease. I haven't missed one since Legions, simply because they are just about as much fun as a tournament can get. Add in the fact that my play group shares my enthusiasm (whereas I'm just about the only one who goes to States or PTQs) and my natural affinity (no pun intended) with limited formats, and it's no wonder why the three months between each one seem much longer than they really are.

It should then come as no surprise that I attended the North Carolina Ravnica: City of Guilds Prerelease over the weekend. As a brief overview for those more interested in one section than another, I'll begin with the construction of my main event (sealed duel) deck, move on to round-by-round notes on the actual main event, and finish with a new deck inspired by the one I used in the tournament. It's worth mentioning that I did participate in the 2-Headed Giant event paired with Cardshark editor Chewie, but I'm afraid that reasonable space (and time) for this article will not permit such coverage (perhaps a follow-up article is in store for next week? Stay tuned). While I will point out the Most Valuable Players of a particular game, at no point am I going to go all ego-trip and boldly list the Best and Worst Cards of This Set, since I don't feel that that's the best use of this space. Feel free to form your own opinion on this subject based on these notes and your own experiences.

I arrive at the scene with Chewie, where we meet up with fellow Cardshark aficionado Michael Shiv

er and his younger brother Thomas. We all sign up together, but as it turns out, Thomas and I are the last entrants to make it into flight 3, so we get started slightly earlier. I say slightly because a new magic player has some difficulty registering cards, resulting in the judge eventually having to do it for him. Overall, the delay in the start of the flight wasn't remarkable, and I'm soon opening product for the first time that day.

As a general note for tournament-goers, please please please do not read your cards as your register your card pool. There will be plenty of time to read your cards later, so unless you are done registering and have plenty of time, do not fall into this trap. This has been said elsewhere, but I find that this is the most common foible of new tournament players, so it's worth mentioning. I apologize for the aside to all those who know and follow this basic rule of thumb.

After registering the card pool, I take a more in-depth look at the trends of the cards. I might not even normally do this, but the 2 flights before this did not pass product after registering, so my intent is to get a jump on the job. These cards have Boros Legion written all over them, both literally and figuratively. With the exception of the Szadek included in a booster, there are no exceptionally strong cards outside of the realm of the white-red guild. Hunted Dragon

, and a nice range of fast and flying soldiers really covered the bases.

Then we pass. I try to not get too attached to the registering pool, since they aren't really my cards anyway, but I did miss giving this highly synchronized group away. I have no idea how it or its new owner did, but I wish them the best.

The first card I see when I open the box is Agrus Kos. Hello, Boros! Prepared to build a fast, red-white monstrosity of brutes, I turn to the rest of the cards.

Aside from gold cards (of which there are no red-white other than Argus and no red-white hybrids), there is 1 white creature in this pool. 1. I sit there, stunned a little to open up such a potentially wrecking creature and having to ignore it, and eventually look at red. Red has 5 times as many creatures as white, but that's not really enough under these circumstances. Resigned, I start to look at the rest of my cards, hoping that there is enough synergy somewhere else to make the deck work. I doesn't take long to find it.

The House Dimir, guild of shadows and secrets, is just as strong in this pool as Boros was in the last. I lose the feeling of disappointment as the deckbuilding begins, and before long I'm caught up in the advantages that this color combination represents. I am actually one of the lucky few that manages to make a smooth deck without splashing a 3rd color. I'm not going to go into the entire card pool, but here is the final version of my prerelease sealed deck.

Rather than going into the deck components here, I'll hit on cards that worked (and those that didn't, although that list is much shorter) during the course of the main event coverage. IENlbGw= is without a doubt flexible removal at its best. Even if the opponent isn't tapping what you want them to, you can always play it out and move it later. Often the mere threat of one on the board is enough to force tough decisions.

can be really good, despite its drawback. What I learned is to simply make sure that you hold back at least 2 blockers to deal with the goblins, and either they won't attack or they'll get weeded out. The majority of the time that the Phantasm hit play, the opponent immediately attacked with the ´´worthless´´ tokens regardless of what else I had.

should not be a common, plain and simple. A 2/2 for 1W and an ability is already efficient, but the Veteran's ability is always going to be relevant, as long as you control at least one other creature. I am not convinced of this card's constructed value, but limited formats are shaped by cards like this one.

Round 4: Vs WR Boros Legion 1-1-1

I know, it really sounds preconceived that I faced all 4 guilds, but that's just the quirkiness of the universe for you. It's worth observing that every player but this last one at least splashed black, regardless of the ´´natural´´ colors of the guild. The set's removal in that color is quite remarkable in a limited format, and I would predict that black will be quickly picked up in draft. In any case, the first game is decided quite quickly by Boros flyers and some mild direct damage. The blockers I manage to field are simply overrun by Skyknight Legionnaire

. Catching a trend, perhaps?

At this point, my rather friendly opponent and myself decided to take an intentional draw. We both felt that we had performed well and were happy with the way our decks performed, and neither of us wanted to leave without winning product. I was truly having a great time at this point and could have walked away happy regardless, but this seemed like a positive way to end the match and main event.

So there you have it. The main event was the most fun I'd ever had at a Prerelease, including the times I have gone 4-0. I'd venture a guess that the 2-Headed Giant event was just as fun, but that is a story for another day…

I leave with a deck that uses the Dimir cards I gained from the main event, plus product I won and a few cards I traded for later. I added in some Standard-legal cards, and this is what I came up with: a deck that is seriously abusive when it comes to card advantage. I hope that you had a good time as well if you attended, and hopefully I'll see you personally in a few months.

Is it Dimir In Here Or Is It Just Me? (60 cards)
