CardShark Content - Brian Baker (11/27/2005)

Some time ago, Wizards of the Coast and DCI ran a weekend of sanctioned 2-Headed Giant tournaments that I and editor Chewie were lucky enough to participate in. This fact alone should be a great cause for celebration, as the increased attention on multiplayer formats from those on high shows an increased interest in broadening format range. A few years ago, Standard and Extended were the only formats offered on a consistent basis for sanctioned tournaments due to an apparent lack of interest in anything else. Since then, Wizards has sponsored Legacy and Vintage formats (at the request of fans, of course) and the tournament scene has begun to take on some variety. Now, in this period of Extended upheaval and Standard rotation, they have decided to support what may be historically the most popular multiplayer format aside from Chaos, and the results are very positive.

When you see text written like this, this is Chewie talking. I thought this might be better than just inserting lots of Editor’s notes. Just so you know. I now return you to your regularly scheduled tournament report.

2-Headed Giant (or 2HG, as I am now going to refer to it) requires a completely different dynamic than a duel. Everything from the card selection to deck construction to turn-x plays are effected in varying ways by the grafting of an additional head next to your own. While constructed 2HG is sure to follow, so far the tournament structure has been sealed. When sitting down to a 2HG sealed event, there are a few pitfalls to avoid in this somewhat perilous limited format.

1. This is not draft. This simple rule has severe consequences on what cards you choose to run or not run.

2. You cannot simply make one good deck depending on which colors are strongest in your pool. Even if it means splashing a color between two decks, you stand a much better chance of drawing consistently good cards when they are evenly distributed.

3. Take advantage of anything that will overcome a creature stall. A longer format usually means that all players have a better chance of building up armies, so anything that gets around this works well. As a quick note, landwalk works wonders here.

4. Pay careful attention to cards that say “Target player” versus “You” or “Target opponent.” This will allow you to consider all your options, which is important for the next point.

5. Help your other “head.” If you are playing control with five cards in hand and your partner is playing burn with a card or two in hand, you should probably let your partner draw off of your Consult the Necrosages

7. People with “poker faces” have a natural advantage, but others (like myself) should do their best to not give away information unintentionally. Bluffing can be something like an art in this format. He absolutely can’t keep a secret. Our opponents were debating over what to do with Followed Footsteps

and we had about 3 ways to deal with whatever they decided, and he was grinning and almost bouncing while I maintained a look of vague hopelessness that you should love to see across the table. By all means, learn the poker face.

8. Try to determine your opponents’ roles as quickly as possible. If you know how each player functions in the group, you will have a better idea of who is countering/milling/attacking on a consistent basis.

9. Milling does work in this format, but don’t push it if you don’t have it. Yes, the format tends to be longer and one player will eventually run out of cards, but don’t push this theme unless you’ve really got the support. He’s right. We even decided to throw in our lone copy of Vedalken Entrancer

just to draw out a removal spell. That’s how powerful milling is in this format.

10. Never throw in the towel. It’s quite possible to come back from horrible beginnings (or even mid-games) if you have constructed your deck well. Just because a situation looks dismal doesn’t mean that it will stay that way.

In the tournament that Chewie and I went to, the turnout was a bit disappointing but could probably be attributed to the fact that there was a PTQ that same day a few towns away and the fact that the Wizards website neglected to list this location. We arrived early and spent our time trading while waiting for the teams to get organized. We felt pretty confident at this point because of the practice we had done the day before.

As a quick aside, practicing for 2HG can be difficult to arrange, but I feel that it really helps to establish play styles between the partners as well as a greater understanding of what cards work best in each deck type. We took a box of Ravnica that Chewie had just ordered (from Cardshark of course!) over to the college campus and met up with two friends. Each team would take seven boosters and use those as the card pool for their two decks. While the distribution was not exactly equal to that of a tournament pack and four boosters, this was a far less expensive simulation. We would play two games with each set of decks, try to analyze what worked and what did not, then begin the process again. With an additional six packs, we were able to complete this process three times and gained invaluable experience in the process.

When the tournament finally started, we opened our packs and began to sort out which colors would go where. I quickly became concerned about what seemed to be a lack of consistency, but Chewie kept me on task by examining card function (kill, burn, beat) first. Once the sorting was done, we had two 2-color decks that were in desperate need of support and a massive pile of green quality that we didn’t know exactly how to fit in. Finally, several considerations and re-fittings later, I had a Dimir-Golgari deck heavy on creature destruction and massive beaters while Chewie manned a Boros deck splashing green for enchantment recursion and flyer control. The results were actually quite pleasing.

Round One- Bye

Well, after all that blood, sweat, and tears to get our decks ready, we had a bye. While we would later regret this turn of events, it gave us time to go to Taco Bell and fill up on semi-Mexican goodness. Which I would later come to regret, but that’s really not important or on topic, is it? We returned and played our decks against each other to get a feel for how they were tuned. What we didn’t know at the time was that the 3-round format combined with the low turnout meant that a bye in the first round would automatically remove us from the running for first place if another team went undefeated. Such is life, and we hold no ill-will toward the tournament organizer for this unfortunate circumstance.

Round Two

Because 2HG games tend to go on for some time, each round was one game only (with no sideboarding, obviously) and in this round we played against a 0-1 team from round one. There isn’t a whole lot to talk about here, fortunately or unfortunately, since our superior evasion, big beats, and burn beat them down in record time. Combos we noted during this game included Ethereal Usher

proved to be too hot to handle for the other team, as each decision to block or let through attackers was doomed to be incorrect. We ended the game with 40 life, having taken damage but gained it back through Firemane and Faith’s Fetters.

One reason we were able to beat these guys so easily is that they were not a team. One was primarily a draft player, so he was focused on the early game, dropping lots of quick beaters that quickly became irrelevant and never really coming up with much else. The other was a guy we had done some trading with earlier, and he apparently specializes in taking weird crappy cards and turning them into viable decks. His deck was built around being neat. , I can’t remember which one. The point is, they were both playing their own game and complaining about how long the game was taking rather than putting their heads together and enjoying the depth of play. That’s something to keep in mind for the next round of 2HG tournaments.

Round Three

Do not let the fact that our bye had us playing a 1-1 team in the final round cloud your perception as to the difficulty of this game. This was a bitter fight to the very end, and probably one of the best games of Magic that I have ever played or been witness to. This was a father-son combo, with the father playing Dimir at the direction of his son, who was playing Selesnya. Neither player even splashed for red, which I can only assume resulted from the outstanding quality of their other cards.

These guys were also demonstrating the other way to approach 2HG tournaments – let one head do the thinking for both. You don’t necessarily need two Magic players to play in one, you just need two people. The father was obviously not as experienced as the son, so the son took care of most of the play decisions. There are downfalls to this, such as the lack of a separate set of eyes and differing viewpoint, but it can be done.

Early game had us facing down a Greyscale Gharial and Dimir Infiltrator

Despite the now frighteningly large amount of evasive creatures on their side, we quickly stabilized (Once we got down to 20 life or below, so I don’t know how quickly it was. We were bummed but never got frustrated, which is another thing to think about for next time) with Stinkweed Imp

and consider the Troll, but Chewie wisely points out that our flyers would then be useless. On the opposing team’s final turn they simply pass, probably content to take a draw. On our last turn, they were at 18 life. At this point I did some quick math, became sad, then became insanely happy. Chewie used the Skysweeper’s ability to take out their last defending flyer and I turned my Svogthos into an 8/8 plant zombie with the gift of being unblockable from the Usher.
