Many have argued the virtues of one draft style over another, especially in the diverse Ravnica environment. While not many doubt the power of a card like Galvanic Arc

in a pack with no other standouts, what happens if the choice is between these two cards and perhaps another stellar pick? It is these choices during more difficult decisions that define a greater part of our playing style.

Some people go into a draft picking a color scheme before even seeing the cards. They do so for several reasons, including the value of that color or colors in the set (green in Mirrodin, for example, was always a solid choice because of the emphasis on artifact removal and solid creatures) or because of familiarity with the colors (players with a tendency to play burn in casual will most likely drift toward red, with exceptions.) Even these individuals can be swayed by two factors that no one knows until the boosters start cracking.

The first factor here is the cards that actually come in the booster. A diehard Selesnya aficionado might have a hard time saying no to Glimpse the Unthinkable

for your casual deck and you happen to open one, you might find your deck moving in that direction. Since no one really knows what is to come until the draft starts, it can be hard to hold onto preconceived ideas of guilds and construction.

The other factor that limits this pre-planning strategy is the presence of the players around you. Unlike in other sealed formats where you make the most of what you are given, a draft player must pay attention to what is coming across. It can be very difficult to stick to a Boros deck if you stop seeing quality white or red cards on the fourth pick. No matter how much you may want to force a deck to fruition, you can’t do it without strong cards, and fighting for cards quickly becomes disappointing.

I recently went online and participated in a RAV-RAV-RAV 4-3-2-2 draft (for the uninitiated, 3 packs of Ravnica with first place receiving 4 packs, second 3, and third and fourth 2 for prize.) I do this all the time, but this time I took the effort to catalogue my picks (and in some instances, although not always, what some other cards I had to think about taking but pass) for the purposes of an instructional article. This article will go step by step through each pick and the rationale for each decision, and then I will list the completed deck at the end.

Here we go:

Of course, Boros works pretty well here, too. There were no other outstanding cards, and Fangtail is a favorite pick of mine. He’s a solid 3/3 body (pretty decent size for this set) with an ability that will always be relevant. Walking creature removal/burn is always great.

IFdvbHZlcw==! I’m sure some people hate this card, and it’s not really my favorite guy in the universe. For an aggressive deck, however, this guy is pretty potent. If you’re playing RW he will always hit the table, no matter what your mana is like, and first strike is a static ability that retains its usefulness throughout a game. Let’s also not forget that he fits into Selesnya pretty well too.

From an aggressive one-drop to a controlling one, this guy may or may not make the cut depending on the creatures in following packs. As the last red card in the pack (with no green or white cards present) this was more about sending a clear message to the person on my left. Whether they got the message or just felt bummed about being shut out of their colors, I have no idea.

Overall, the first pack seems pretty evenly split W-R-G. I’m hoping to see more Selesnya cards in the upcoming packs to justify my first-pack pick , but I’m still pretty open at this point.

Poor old Sparky is never going to be a first-pick card, but the direct damage with a 2-cost body can actually be quite useful. He’s even better with bounce, but that’s not really much of an option at this point.

I could be a wuss or a liar and tell you that I picked the Boros Fury-Shield in this pack instead of the off-color weenie/card advantage machine. I’m listing this because no one is completely unmotivated to take cards simply to add them to your collection. The Confidant does not work in my draft deck, but it does work in a number of black decks I have online. Hence, after some debate, I determined that my deck was reaching a power level where I felt comfortable going for the rare. While this is not the “right” move, it is the one that I made.

As if to say “it’s ok,” my choice of the off-color card is more or less made-up for by seeing this awesome aura. This is a fourth pick, which says a great deal about the players passing me cards. In case there is any debate about my position about this card, I consider it an auto-include if the colors support it. Other cards in this pack included Vitu-Ghazi (best if splashing) and a Swiftblade.

The deck did reasonably well, winning soundly in the first round against a solid Golgari deck that optimized getting out fast Rotwurms.
