CardShark Content - Brian Baker (9/13/2006)

I hope that those of you who read my last article for Cardshark enjoyed the preconstructed deck revision. It can be such a fun exercise for me that I’m going to try to approach it on a regular basis, provided that readers such as yourself don’t flood me with negative responses to it.

Today’s article is something completely different. This is more intended for the regular to serious tournament players out there, but as always I hope that each reader takes something away from the article. In this article, I’m going to take a look at Ohran Viper

has been at the center of attention since it was previewed on magicthegathering.com a week before the prerelease tournament. Numerous players and deck builders have contested its value, and what deck it best belongs in.

Aside from every green deck that there ever was, of course.

. I know that many or all of you will probably say that you always knew how great old Solemn was, but you didn’t really appreciate it until you had to deal with it.

Both cards represent inherent card advantage. Solemn, if not countered, always got you a 3 for 1: a land, a 2/2 creature, and a card when it died. Ohran Viper

can do the same against burn spells and massive suicide blockers.

If the deck runs into trouble on a creature front, it simply resets the board and tries to replay a Viper. Valkyries do an excellent job of making sure that the Viper you have in play stays in play, or can make an opponent’s huge creature facing Wrath turn traitor. Everybody loves Viper in this deck; Hierarch even sacrifices itself to make sure that the serpent stays around.

Overall, the deck feels solid. It really wants the card advantage that Viper brings to the table, but it can survive simply based on the sturdiness of its other cards. It runs into trouble, however, if it should ever lose its Hierarchs and Valkyries to Cranial Extraction

rush, the deck’s cheap counters can prevent the signature beast from making it into play.

As a last note about this deck, the consistency offered by Sosuke’s Summons is truly terrifying. Anyone who has played against the Standard deck Snakes (which this deck owes a lot to, obviously) can tell you about how frustrating it can be to have to race against the otherwise innocuous token engine.

So, you might ask, what does this deck do? I’ll tell you, friend, that this deck does not like you. It is nothing personal, but this deck has no warm feelings toward anyone or anything. These snakes are rather angry, and they’re coming for you.

This deck takes the Gruul beatdown mentality and gives it the extra oomph it sometimes requires. You won’t see Burning-Tree Shaman or Scab-Clan Mauler here. This deck prefers to punish its opponents in an unceasing onslaught. The deck may take a few turns to get going, but it quickly becomes so frighteningly vicious that you may feel pity for the poor souls having to face its wrath.

The deck is functionally very simple, which gives it some versatility. The land destruction spells, for example, can be played early or late depending on what actions the opponent is taking. Burn spells too can either come out fast, finish an opponent off, or merely clear the way for attacking Vipers. Go with your instinct with this deck, and don’t hesitate to burn down anything that gets in your way.

, spokesperson of the “Fat and Loving It Creatures League,” doesn’t really mind not having trample in this deck. If he gets blocked, it just means that there’s at least one less body in front of your Viper. Even without attacking he brings the opponent closer to burn range, which is probably how most of your games with this deck are going to end.

does a great job in each of these decks, it’s simply amazing what it does for Angry Snake. Drawing two burn spells, two LD spells, or a combination of both will give you lots of ammunition, while even just drawing through land will help you get to the deck’s power cards.

That wraps up this look at the famous Ohran Viper

. Don’t let the fact that this card seems straightforward make you ignore its possibilities, and give the green guy a chance. With Standard in the state that it is in right now, chances are that you will see the snake either on your side of the table or on the other guy’s team. Be prepared, and enjoy drawing an extra card or two every turn.
