Lorwyn Tournament Report - Brian Baker (10/29/2007)

There’s no tournament quite like a Prerelease. That new-card, new-set smell brings a tear to my eye every time I...

Oh, yeah.

I didn’t get the chance to make it to the Lorwyn Prerelease. Due to circumstances beyond my control, including a more restrictive budget than in previous months, I had to miss my first non-Core set Prerelease since Legions. I hope that everyone that did get to go had a good time cracking the packs and smashing face.

I made a point of making sure that I could go to the Lorwyn release tournament at the local store on the 13th. On top of that, I was joined by Cardshark editor Chewie, high school science teacher extraordinaire Dirk, and out-of-town friend AJ. A good time was had by all, and I finally got my hands on some tribal goodness.

With fifteen players in attendance (average size for release tournament, with multiple other locations hosting the same tournament in the state), the structure for the day’s main event was four rounds of swiss with a cut to top eight players for single elimination rounds. In addition to normal prize support, the top four players got to choose, in rank order, from a pool of Damnation

.

Despite the fact that there were fifteen players, competition was fierce. Many strong decks were assembled, and at the end of the initial swiss all four of us had scored highly enough for prize. I was ranked 4th, AJ was 6th, Chewie was 10th, and Dirk was 12th. After the single elimination rounds, I ended up 3rd and AJ came in 2nd. Only one player, Steve, was undefeated. In fact, Steve gave me my only losses in each part of the event.

With any set, it’s important to see how each card works. This is not the simplistic exercise that it sounds like, some cards that look great on paper can never really be as great as you hope they will be. The only true test is practice and experience.

For this end, here are the decks that we used in the tournament. The pool to build each from was six booster packs. Keep in mind that this tournament allowed “main-deck modification,” where players are free to reconstruct their decks (using only cards from their given pool, of course) during the course of the day. This allows for a learning sort of environment, where players could try out cards or combinations, not be punished all day for not knowing what would work at the beginning of the building process, but still compete for wins by building the best decks as early as possible. The decks listed below are the final versions of the decks, at the end of the event.

You will notice some things right away. First of all, there are only 14 land in the deck. That’s pretty ambitious, especially for a three-color deck. Second, there are 14 creatures. That’s at the low end of any amount I would recommend for a sealed (or draft) deck in this format. Still, like I said, AJ did very well.

The strength of this deck is really in the non-creature spells. All but the Blades of Velis Vel

His third and fourth games were both 1-2 rounds, but he had still done well enough to land in top eight territory. In his third round, he lost to a U/G faeries and treefolk deck. It seems that his primary problem was not being able to deal with the opponent’s numerous flyers. The game he did win in that round came on the back of burn, specifically Tarfire

(there was apparently some confusion about this, but the judge backed it up). Chewie won that game at one life. In the last game, the opponent experienced some mana screw and couldn’t mount a defense.

Chewie’s deck intrigued me. I think the final version was very strong, but considering the changes he made, it was a matter of trial and error to get to the end result. This is why I think that these early tournaments and reports are good tools, the tournaments for our sake in learning what works, and the reports to pass along that knowledge to you.

, and some amount of removal. Before anyone judges him too harshly for that, however, let’s talk about personal taste. No matter what level of player you are, personal taste factors into your card choices. If a player is presented with three sets of cards of different colors and tribes of somewhat equal value, they will chose the card set that best complements their play style and personal preferences. Dirk is a green mage through and through, and while he can venture away when he builds a deck, playing the color’s efficient creatures and tricks is where he will perform best.

The deck lacks evasion, but makes up for it in pure efficiency. Knight of Meadowgrain

made a difference.

Dirk lost the next two rounds. In the third, he played against a B/R deck full of removal. The creature destruction and burn cards allowed the opponent to pick off Dirk’s fast creatures until Goblins and Giants could come down to finish things. Dirk did not give me any feedback for his last round.

So there you go, four decks and results for three to four rounds apiece. A lot of ground was covered at that tournament, and all of us gained a lot of insight into the limited stars, duds, and playables of Lorwyn. More importantly, we all had fun and enjoyed each other’s company (always a plus when friends get together to play a game). Hopefully you can take some insight from this, and better arm yourself the next time you decide to wander into the arena. Lorwyn is a blast, and limited is going to be a very interesting forum for the next while. Until next time, thanks for reading!
