is upon us. Are you ready? Most people have only had limited experience with the set, based mainly on card previews from websites or podcasts and on prerelease experiences. While the prerelease is a rather casual sanctioned tournament, it still serves as a good indication of first impressions.

Some first impressions are correct, while others are wildly misleading. Telling one from the other is easier said than done, but regardless of the difficulties in predicting the next constructed superstars (who really though Myr Enforcer

being a part of the Lorwyn block means more than just caring about creature classes, there are a wide variety of themes and powerful card sets and individuals to exploit. How do we best tackle such a brave new world, one might ask?

The answer, usually, is in keen observation of sheer numbers.

I want to choose my words a little carefully for this article, as I have five decklists for you to dissect. In the formatting for articles on this site, five decks with mostly one-ofs is already going to be a long vertical adventure down the page, so I don’t want to keep you reading until your eyes fall out of your head and the card names don’t make sense any more. With that said, let’s look at the lists and see what lessons we can learn, shall we?

and Garruk right away, and I don’t want to dismiss them. Having truly powerful cards is not only a boon, but at times a necessity. It’s a frustrating fact, but if your deck lacks the power and runs into one that does, it’s at best an uphill battle. This is a fact that is difficult to get past in Sealed, with no selection of your overall pool, but it’s a fact nonetheless.

Getting past the bombs, there is some synergy here. The card that really tied the deck together (and managed to show up quite a bit, thankfully) was Bramblewood Paragon

Mike’s deck represents an interesting W/U build. Notice the twelve non-creature spells in the deck, which give it a sort of “tricky” feel. For the uninformed or simply new: don’t play this deck. That is not a knock against this deck or its creator. In my experience, I see a great deal of new players (or players simply new to sealed) pack their deck with a large number of tricks without the creature power to back them up. Your deck may be able to do all sorts of delaying or other cute stuff, but you will run out of answers before they run out of threats almost every time.

Mike can pull this off, though. He has a good curve here, with no splashes competing for color space. The tricks that he has included range from card advantage to combat tricks to the awesomeness of Ajani. Faerie Trickery

mana open without fear of losing your guys to the opponent’s trick. When in doubt, however, counter Chandra all day long.

He has two of the “class equipments” here. Each of these equipment cards, including the three others in the set, makes a pretty nice impact on the board regardless of whether you’ve got the creature type it loves (although that’s always a very nice bonus). The Wand gets special attention for both giving a creature evasion and providing card advantage.

Brian’s Lesson: look closely at your non-creature spells. Does each one do something necessary, or will it have a noticeable effect on the board? How conditional are they? Do I always have to keep mana open, and how does that affect my own drops on my turn? Having quite a few isn’t a bad thing, but putting in good tricks instead of great creatures or a tighter mana base is not a good idea.

), this deck seems focused more on the available removal colors with green for beats. Weed-Pruner Poplar is a workhorse in this type of deck, especially in multiples. 3/3s are usually sufficiently large bodies in sealed formats, and the ability to kill faeries and kithkin without further mana or card investment is invaluable. The fact that they trigger on upkeep means that playing weak chump blockers is not going to save them, and they do a good job on small utility creatures that could otherwise be a problem (Ink Dissolver

Nineteen land is just about the highest I would want to go in this sealed block, especially without any card draw to get you through it faster. doesn’t look like it will take long to come online here, either.

Here we have Wolfstalker’s W/G/r deck. I have to give him props for choosing his splash well. If you’re going to go to the trouble of adding in a small color contribution to your mana sources, you should make sure that it’s a good addition to the deck, and here it is.

All of his red splash is direct damage, capable of hitting creatures or players. With the presence of the kithkin curving into flyers and some treefolk, it’s easy to see these spells acting more as finishers than simple removal. Given the fact that the deck contains two of the most powerful shapeshifters, Chameleon Colossus

and Titan’s Revenge serve similar roles, allowing you to play smaller threats and then use your mana development for devastating results.

Brian’s Lesson: aggressive decks can be more difficult to build than simply putting in small creatures. Wolfstalker’s deck allows for applying building pressure to an opponent, allowing for the player to make the best decisions rather than having to act defensively. The evasive creatures fill a very important role here. Massive finishing creatures and burn spells round out such a deck well, and burn is especially important for breaking through after the other deck has had a chance to play their own answers.

Well, gee, it looks like green was a popular color. There’s a reason for that, since limited is just about always creature-reliant and green just does creatures well.

Here you see the Paragon again making an appearance. In case you didn’t catch my enthusiastic support earlier, you should play ‘em if you rip ‘em. The synergy is especially nice with the Brighthearth Banneret

, who both helps play out your warriors or can give a creature trample with the Paragon out (at instant speed, no less). Also, once again the planeswalkers make the cut. I don’t think that that will surprise anyone at this point.

. Both are more reliant on you having out creatures than a Titan’s Revenge, but both allow you do use more of your mana for other things. The Disdain is an instant to boot.

Brian’s Lesson: sometimes, like I said earlier, it simply comes down to having the best cards. Each card in Chewie’s deck stands up on its own and would probably be playable under different circumstances. He built his deck with some consideration for creature types and synergies, but even outside that, he made the choice to include simply solid cards. Nine times out of ten, it is not worth it to include suboptimal cards in your sealed deck simply because they fit the theme.

So there you have it, five decks, lots of cards. I hope that everyone had a good time at the prerelease tournaments, and I know that we’re all eager to explore the new set even more. As you enjoy your next few games and experiences with Morningtide
