Random is Good - Brian Baker (6/10/2007)

At the time that I am writing this, the Magic media scene is abuzz with predictions and advice for Regionals. Depending on what date this article is posted, the event may very well have come and gone. [Editor's note: Yup, it was yesterday. My bust.] I wish all the best luck to the competitors, while I had brief thoughts of participation and the inevitable glory that would follow, I eventually came to the conclusion that I simply did not have the time to devote to testing that would be required.

Instead, I’m going to focus today on Sealed, everyone’s favorite format. After all, it’s widely known that every tournament participant from the gung-ho Spikes to the casual guys who wandered in for a good time loves a format where you have zero control over your pool and are decidedly left to the whims of fancy.

What? Not everyone loves Sealed?

As a die-hard limited player, it’s hard for me to imagine, but I will concede the point that some (or arguably quite a few) players find a format like Sealed to be frustrating and unrewarding. Serious constructed aficionados like to have a great deal of control over what goes into their decks. Net-deckers are always on the search for what the best deck will be in order to make sure that they play nothing less, and innovators will likewise look for new interactions to exploit. Neither group, nor the countless players that fall into the gray areas between, likes giving up the control.

Still, I would argue that there is quite a bit that Sealed has got going for it. Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who tends to break even in Sealed events, so it’s not like this is advice from the next World Champion. If I enjoy Sealed, trust me: it’s purely for the experience rather than any skill on my part.

Sealed immediately puts everyone on equal footing, for about two minutes. No matter the budget of the individual players, each participant starts out exactly the same. This only lasts until the product is opened, but if the design of a set isn’t completely out of whack, some semblance of this equity will remain throughout.

After all, everyone hears about the players that open up the killer packs. It’s really no surprise that someone will end up with a pile of good cards, hopefully Wizards will keep printing enough that somebody’s going to be sitting pretty. That doesn’t mean that that person is unbeatable, and it certainly does not mean that everyone else there is immediately out of contention. Your cards are only as good as your deck building skills, and if you don’t believe me, you simply haven’t played enough Sealed.

Not to mention, there are always going to be disagreements about which cards are truly “best” at any time. Akromas (White and Red) win the game, unless that kind of mana is simply inaccessible without further tricks. Weatherseed Totem

. Get the idea?

Assuming that some players will actually get strictly worse pools than others, why is that a bad thing? There is a great sense of accomplishment in building a winning deck of imperfect parts, but even the uncertainty of the quality of the pools makes for more tension, hence for more interesting games.

The initial point that I want to make is that Sealed is actually an involved process that is made more interesting rather than hurt by its limiting factors. Being lucky does not mean that someone will win, but the fact that even a superior player must occasionally deal with less than optimal cards brings more variety to matches.

Seeing as how I take every opportunity to use writing an article as an excuse to get in more time actually playing Magic, I’ve signed up for an online Future Sight

release League to illustrate this and a few other points about Sealed. I’m a big believer in practicing what you preach, and all the theories in the world won’t do a player any good if none of them pan out, so practical illustration is always better than just stating thoughts.

Whew… there is quite a bit of quality here. Like I said earlier, having great cards doesn’t amount to victory yet, as it’s quite likely that someone has pulled equal or better stuff.

Rather than talking about the great stuff, let’s talk about the stuff that can be eliminated off the bat.

, puts me in somewhat of a stall. White, blue, and green each have great options, but going 3 colors with a splash and NO available color fixing (lucky me) is not an acceptable plan of action.

Green’s power is undeniable. Very few if any of the cards provided would not be main deck options. The real question is the decision between white and blue. White has enchantment removal, Lumithread Field

What’s a guy to do?

Overall, I feel that blue represents more stability and consistency. While single cards in white are great, any card drawn in blue is going to help. Also, with green as a main color (THE main color, it’s safe to say), blue’s non-creature cards will fill the slots better than white’s creature-heavy slant.

Here’s what the deck looks like at first glance (with possible revisions to follow):

cw==. The damage adds up, and pretty soon I’m packing it up.

3-2

This round was very tough on me. As far as creatures go, mine were pretty much superior to his in every aspect. The biggest problem for me to overcome was his abundance of burn. It’s important to always remember that just because you didn’t pull the best common removal in a color doesn’t mean that someone else didn’t. It doesn’t automatically mean that you lose, either. That second game was long and rough, but I tried to make every correct play that I could and avoid opening up for his aggressive forces. I regret losing this match, but I stand behind how I played it regardless.

4-4

Arg. Well, while this is not turning out the way that I expected, there is a saying about learning more from losing than winning. Also, never forget that even the best players will not win every game. Despite all of the factors involved, Magic remains a game of luck and unpredictability. This doesn’t take away from victory, including my opponent’s, but it does mean that not every loss is entirely your fault. Pick yourself up, look at what you did, and keep playing.

for the first time in thirteen games is the final nail in his coffin.

8-5

That last match was long and very difficult. The last game ended with us both having around 10 cards in our decks, but it was very satisfying.

The message that I want to leave you with is not one about how to win at Sealed necessarily, but instead to not dismiss the format as swingy or too luck-dependant. Every game you play is determined by luck to some extent, and simply not having control over an initial pool is not reason enough to avoid playing Sealed. It’s fun, it’s challenging, and it makes you evaluate card choices that you might never otherwise consider.

Until next time, have fun building 40 out of piles of complete randomness!
