TSP Block Discard - Brian Baker (4/26/2007)

If you’ve ever read any of my articles (which, if you haven’t, I don’t blame you for since I’ve been in-and-out on writing them for a while), you know that I LOVE building decks just as much and at times more than playing them. There’s something satisfying about the creative process, about matching up the potential cards to get the most interesting or consistent effect. ), mono-colored decks, 5 color decks… I’ve attempted to make decks in just about every direction I can think of for over 5 years now, and I’m sure that I have just scratched the surface.

For this article, I’m going to take you through a deck’s evolution. Rather than starting with a Preconstructed Theme deck, which I enjoy doing and have in the past, I wanted to start with a concept.

I’m going to be building a Time Spiral

can create, and I wanted to keep it in-block to see how it would compare against the block’s other contenders.

For the purposes of this exercise, I’m going to build a deck and play it for at least 5 games before I change any of the cards. This is so I have the best possible idea of what works and what doesn’t before I make any significant changes. After that, I will play an additional 5 games to see how the retooled version plays.

When I build this deck, I want to avoid the overtly obvious. This means that I want to avoid putting in things like The Rack

Despite the fact that I lost, I don’t feel to bad. I’d have to say that it’s a tough battle for a discard deck to beat a deck that tries to make itself discard. I pretty much enabled his deck to smack me around, and I’m not sure that there’s really a good way for this type of deck to get around that. We’ll see.
