My Name is MUD - Brian Lane (5/18/2010)

I am something of a novice in Vintage. I've only played a few tournaments, with janky burn.dec lists, but I do read the typical eternal format go-to's, like Stephen Menendian and Matt Elias's weekly articles, and I read The Mana Drain

religiously, if I don't actively participate. I've played a few Legacy tournaments with a proper Merfolk list, and enjoy Extended more than any other format, but the lure of the fabled Type I scene - and the encouragement of my pal, Dan - pushed me to actually try to put together a list. Most Vintage tournaments in the New York area are 10-proxy events, so with a little finagling, putting together a functional 10-proxy Vintage list doesn't break the bank. I started, little by little, assembling a brown Workshop aggro deck (MUD), and in the last month I finally completed the 10-proxy little number.

One thing I find really fun and interesting about Vintage is that the metagame seems to come alive in a much more vibrant fashion that in other formats. Decklists shift tournament to tournament because the scenes are fairly local, so if you see X or Y player pounding Dunkin' Donuts coffee at a given tournament, you can be fairly certain of their decks. Because the format can be expensive, it seems most people have one or two decks they focus on, and they spend their time tweaking them. With my new Workshop list, I managed to Top 4 a small Brooklyn event recently. The fun of the event convinced me to actively focus more of my time and paltry Magic mental accuity on Vintage. and Confidant playsets for Extended, and a Lotus and other Power goodies for Vintage. My tournament prep had a really cool feature in that I
somehow fell in with some good Vintage players, so I got to do some proper Vintage testing against Tezzeret and Oath and Fish, although probably not enough in the case of Oath.

I sleeved up a Workshop aggro deck very similar to my build from last week, but this time featuring 4 Juggernaut

Round 5: The dreaded Mirror

When I saw my pairings I figured my chances were over, because I was paired against A., a Shop player who I beat the weekend before in the quarterfinals of a Vintage tournament , mostly because he mulled to 4 game three. The Mirror is a really stupid matchup, because it basically comes down to who wins the die roll. And he did. Theoretically, he will Sphere me out game 1, I will Sphere him out game 2, and he will Sphere me out game 3. Game 1 proceeded as predicted, although three Wasteland

I checked the pairings and figured it out: if I won this match, I could draw into the Top 8. Holy moley! I got to my table and met S., a player I had played a few Vintage tournaments ago at King's Games.
He was playing Painter there, and I was mono-red, and we had a hard fought three-gamer that he ended up winning with a Gargadon. I think he was a little suprised when I Sphered the heck out of him game 1 (the classic Chalice for 0 successfully baited his Force, followed by Mishra

In the end, I came in 23rd place (out of 82), so I was happy overall, but I really wish I could have beaten Oath that 6th round to make top 8. I got some good tips from A. on how to make the deck better,
though. My girlfriend came down to Philadelphia with me, and we spent the Sunday after the tournament visiting museums and local sites. If you find yourself in Philadelphia, I highly recommend the Mutter Musem. Also, I went to this place for dinner http://www.percystreet.com/ and enjoyed some amazing Texas-style BBQ.

There are quite a few Vintage tournaments coming up in the next few weeks, so I spend quite a bit of time thinking about my deck, how to beat Oath, and how to change my sideboard. I think sacrificing Dredge
