vs. Eldrazi should have dropped like it's hot by the time this article sees print, and in it you will see a copy of this guy:

Oblivion Sower: 6 (rare or mythic rare, I ain't really sure)
Creature – Eldrazi
When you cast Oblivion Sower, target opponent exiles the top four cards of his or her library, then you may put any number of land cards that player owns from exile onto the battlefield under your control.

and thus Standard legal when that set releases later this fall. Let's discuss how we can use him. Keep in mind that I've mysteriously lost all contact with the mole whom I had employed to secretly infiltrate Wizards of the Coast (I suspect that Rosewater killed him and had Gottlieb hide the body) and as such I have no knowledge of the contents of said forthcoming set. This means that I'll be talking about using the Sower in a post-Theros

/pre-Battle vacuum without any accompanying cards from BFZ.

The first thing we need to do is break down the Sower into its component parts, in hopes that an eldrazi autopsy will grant us a little insight into exactly how to use this guy. Let's start off with that mana cost of 6. While the Sower is not the most difficult card to cast from your hand ever in the history of ever, six mana is still a sizable enough investment. Call me crazy, but one would probably like to instantly win the game after tapping out to cast something that expensive. The question is “can the Sower win on its' own?” Assuming that the answer is yes, the Sower has two things going for it. 1) the lack of colored mana is a plus, as any color can play it, and 2) we are living a Tarkir world, after all, where mana acceleration abounds!

(SIDENOTE: I haven't even mentioned the various sick & twisted combo cards in the current Standard environment that outright cheat the Sower into play, largely because I can't think of a single one off the top of my head at this particular moment. Maybe it'll come to me by the time I get to the decklist section of this here piece.)

Moving a bit further down the card, we come to creature type. Well, it's an eldrazi. I think it's a safe bet that there will be other eldrazi, but as we don't know of them yet, there's no point in commenting on any synergy or lack thereof with them.

We can discuss the Sower's uneven power to toughness ratio, however. His 5/8 stats certainly make him into a respectable offensive threat. He's no slouch on defense, either. His biggest drawback is the lack of any evasion abilities like flying. In the current Standard environment of big beasties, he can be chump blocked all day long. Said lack of evasion also makes the Sower rather useless defensively against Tarkir's indigenous population of flying winged reptiles.

The real meat on these bones is the Sower's text box. “When you cast Oblivion Sower, target opponent exiles the top four cards of his or her library, then you may put any number of land cards that player owns from exile onto the battlefield under your control.” My initial impression upon my first reading of this card were as follows:

1) Annhilator is gone. Woo hoo!
2) Six mana is a lot to pay for a one-shot mill effect.
3) On the other hand, he is a creature and creatures can be bounced. Cast, bounce, recast, repeat. But is it worth it?
4) I get to keep these exiled lands, you say?
5) Fetch the Disperse

s, Paka –we've got eldrazi in the rutabagas!
6) Thank the ever merciful Gods that Magic 2015 is rotating out! If the Sower was in the same environment as 2015's blue/green bounce effects, It would've made this whole “collectible card game” thing look absolutely ri-dic-ulous.

If we add up all of the above together, I believe that we have something special in the Oblivion Sower. We have a creature that's versatile enough for use in a variety of strategies, with the caveat that we will definitely have to build around him. I do have a pair of ideas for some Sower-based deck builds, however. Idea Number One is to bring multiple Oblivion Sowers into play via heavy green mana acceleration in order to both deny our opponent access to his own mana while killing him with the quickness. (In a similar vein, we can also get the Sower online via the use of library tutoring a.k.a. “cheating him out” as I mentioned in my sidenote.) Following that thought out to its logical conclusion leaves us with a deck similar to the following:

SPEEDING UP TO SLOW DOWN (Soon to be Standard legal. Uncommons marked with one asterisk, rares with two, mythics with three.)
