Type one is by far the most intense format of Magic the Gathering. People may complain that the games are all over too quickly with not enough turns to show true playing skills, but more goes on in those few turns than a whole four round tournament of attacking with frogmites. One of the allures of type one is the sheer volume of viable ways to win and decks that incorporates those. Even though there may be ´´the´´ decks, there are so many powerful cards available to a player that any well crafted deck can steal a few games.

The number one perceived draw back of playing in perhaps the most rewarding format available is the cost. Type one has the monopoly on the triple digit priced cards. However, no matter how much having those cards may help a deck, most of the time it is possible to build a viable deck without the power nine or any other card priced in the hundreds. These ´´budget´´ decks are easy ways to get into playing type one on a competitive level without spending lots of money. The following is a deck that I have recently fallen for after trying out many type one budget decks. All the card prices are based on those here and now on Cardshark. It's called Landstill:

(the total cost is $214.06, which is not cheap, however take the price of certain popular type two creatures. And they say standard is cheap.)

Before taking a second glance at the list here's an explanation of what makes the deck tick. The big part of the deck is to get a standstill and then start attacking with your man lands. The thing is that playing lands and animating them doesn't kill the standstill. However for your opponent to deal with them he will have to break the standstill in your favor. With the great card drawing, this deck can put out a fair amount of control. The counters in the list are pretty much the standard for all Landstill decks. Don't be afraid to use force of will on your opponents stuff. Even though this does count as card disadvantage you'll be drawing enough off of broken standstills to support this loss of cards.

The red in the deck is used as board control in the form of Fire/Ice and Lightning Bolt

and disk. The use of both disks and kegs is a little strange as most decks run one or the other. The keg is better against sligh and the disk is better against prison/control decks (stompy too). The main reason I chose not to run four disks is that most builds run four Mana Drain

. It has great synergy with the deck but for some reason I just couldn't mainbaord something that specific. Definitely four in the sideboard though.

Two bits on playing this deck. The first is if your opponent breaks a standstill, you draw before the spell resolves, letting you counter it off of the drawn cards. The second thing is that you may find your opponent is afraid to break the standstill even if you don't have out a man land. This is good for you because Landstill runs far more land than most type one decks. This means that in those stand stilled turns you will be making many more land drops than your opponent and building a superior mana base.

Another color for Landstill to use is white. Swords to Plowshares

when cycled) all make for a quality deck. However the red version is far more versitile than that with white. The bolts and Fire/Ice can be aimed at the player if they have no creatures out as compared to swords which can't do anything. Also with running so much land, Balance

can give you the sour end of the deal. In the end, red is a more versatile color.

Two last bits on building the deck. One, make sure you take into account what your local meta game is and tweak accordingly. Second, this deck runs off of a large amount of land so it can only really support one fetch land. Two at the most.

So I hope you start looking into type one as a format that you can play in. If not by playing Landstill, at least give some other deck a try.
