So here I am again with something a little different. I was kicking around some ideas about what to write for my next article, and a guy on the forums inspired me. He talked about a deck he had built, and that deck took elements from two of my own decks and put them together. So I decided to write about those two decks, since they are, on closer examination, actually pretty similar. So let’s get down to it. King Honkey, this one’s for you.

Today, I’m going to talk about symmetry. Well, no, not really. I’m going to talk about breaking symmetry. Breaking symmetry is a great way to abuse cards and win games. Just think of all the symmetrical cards that have been broken in winning tournament decks. Wrath of God

But if so, the problem should be apparent to some of you out there. Even though my opponents are taking damage, they’re getting double the mana! I’ve broken two symmetries, one good for me and one bad for me. So while they’re getting slowly whittled away, they’re hitting me with a double-size Drain Life

to speed up the process and keep myself alive longer, but the Wastes shut down life gain! I thought about keeping it in play until I started to get into the danger zone, then bouncing it or losing it or something, but then I’d lose an extra 5 life, which is never good. So how did I manage it? If I died because my life hit zero, and I couldn’t gain life to keep myself from hitting zero, then I should have been tossing the card back into the junk rares, right? Wrong! There is one card that, when paired with the Forsaken Wastes

keeps me from losing due to life loss, but makes me lose due to life gain, which isn’t working! It’s great! I can lose life until I hit zero, then keep on trucking because I can’t lose that way!

The only problem is, if one of these enchantments gets knocked out, I’m most definitely dead. Immediately. So I needed a good way to protect them. After hitting up the Gatherer for research, I found Fountain Watch

. Since I designed the deck to win with beatdown, this did not make me happy. I tried to build the deck around the life-loss, but I realized that this was not only a bad idea for my multiplayer group, it was basically suicidal. That’s when the inspiration hit me. If I’m making everyone lose ridiculous amounts of life, we’ll all die faster. If I break the symmetry, then I’ll be the one humming the BeeGees song (that’s Stayin’ Alive for all you kids out there). So I tossed in lots of the life-loss zombies for the kill, and there you have it.

But now what? I have a lock and I have a fairly slow kill. I looked at Vengeful Dead

So there you have it. I’ve taken two symmetrical and fairly crappy cards and built decks around them. I did this by analyzing exactly what it was about each card that was bad for me and removing that from the equation. Actually, my friend Mike helped me get these two decks to their current state. I provided the ideas and he provided the card choices for the most part. Thanks a lot Rhad!

Now, let’s go back to the classic cards I mentioned before and figure out a few simple ways to break their symmetry. I’ve done no research into old decks prior to writing this. In fact I’m half asleep at this point, so this is all off the top of my head.

These are all quick and simple ways to break symmetry. As I said, all of these were written off the top of my head, spending less than a minute on each one, coming up with each idea as I typed the one before it. You can do this too. So feel free to dig through your crappy rares and uncommons. Find those cards that seem like they hurt or help you just as much as your opponent. Now find a way to keep that from happening. It’s a great challenge for your deckbuilding skills, and I guarantee that you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished something when you’re done. Until next time when I write another article about something else (feel free to hit me with more suggestions), enjoy breaking some symmetry and some faces.
