Here I am again with another chaos-friendly article. This time, I’m going to shift a little bit. I’m not going to be showing off a cool deck. I’m not going to take a dueling deck and turn it into a chaos killer. I’m not going to take a chaos deck and make it do what it’s already doing, only better. This time I’m going to take a deck that has already proven itself many times over and change the way it works. I’m going to shift its focus. Actually, I’m going to give it a focus. This one really doesn’t have one at the moment.

It’s my old tribal Soldier deck. When I first built it, I would play it about once every other dorking session or so. It works fabulously as a weenie beatdown, even in multiplayer. Here’s how it looks now.

See? It’s just a general, all-purpose tribal soldier deck. Since I wanted to include as many as possible, I decided to go with two of each important soldier and just one of each of the ones I threw in for fun. The assorted non-creature spells are tailored to help the deck win, providing pump or removal as necessary. The idea is to win with variety, if that makes any sense at all. With so many creatures of different functions, I can drop them as needed and do cool things with them.

can destroy something big that scares me a lot. The Brigadier can make all my guys bigger. The Warhawk can get genuinely huge when Amplify and all the creature-pump meet.

My favorite part of this deck is easily the Catapult guys though. The Squad can recruit two soldiers to pick off anyone trying to get to me or anyone getting in my way. The Master can recruit five soldiers to go grab an opposing creature, load him up in the catapult, and chuck him right out of the game. Masako the Humorless

. In my experience, this is a very weird card. Usually, in a big chaos game, it will leave half the board untouched while completely destroying the other half. This tends to really tick off the people with no defense left, and it’s really just unfair. Why should I choose who lives and dies just because they may or may not be playing tribal? There’s a valuable lesson to be learned here about making multiplayer games enjoyable for everyone. So out goes this spell, and in comes a piece of equipment.

Imagine if you will that you control the world. No one can move unless you say so, and you are most definitely not going to say so. You can move about the world as you please, destroying lives and sparing lives as you see fit. If anyone moves without your permission, you freeze them in place and stroll by them. This world can be a reality. Just have a whole mess of soldiers on your side and equip the Catapult Squad

with Neko-Te. Suddenly you’re Leonardo DiCaprio standing on the bow of that great big boat. For those of you that may have missed the reference, you’re the king of the world!

So now, everything in the deck is working with the Catapult guys, whether it’s by untapping your soldiers, forcing an attack or block, or giving you more soldiers to use. Now, once you clear the way of all those pesky creatures, you can run across and crush the opposition. Here’s the new deck in its entirety.

This lack of focus is a problem that we all face as deckbuilders. We decide to build a deck based around something-or-other. But sometimes that something-or-other is just too broad, and the resulting deck is just a mishmash of random stuff that is held together loosely at best. I have another monowhite deck that is just a big bunch of scary creatures and removal. It’s a fair amount of fun when it works, and it tends to win just on the sheer number of big angelic flyers. But there is really no focus, nothing that I’m trying to pull off when I play it. The only goal for the deck is to win.

Multiplayer chaos games aren’t really about who wins. Not really. Group games are for playing the deck you built and trying to make it do what it’s supposed to do before the game ends. Go back to some of my other articles for an idea of this. Equipping Raksha and letting my super-powered cats run wild. Getting out Transcendence

. All three decks in the Civic Beautification Project are built to do one cool thing. If that cool thing works over the course of the game, I really don’t care if I win or lose, so long as I know the deck works.

I’m sure a lot of you are like this, because my entire group of dorks is like this. Good old Dirk has a deck built around lots and lots (and lots) of equipment and the Vulshok Battlemaster

. If he can drop several good pieces of equipment, including one that grants trample, and utterly destroy one person with his Battlemaster, he’s happy. If he had a Warhammer on there, he can survive long enough to do it again and he’s even happier. There have been quite a few times when a lone Lightning Greaves

caused him to win with a lone, well-equipped Vulshok dude, simply because all our removal was ineffective. There have been other times when the Vulshok dude was anticipated and taken care of before he could touch anyone, but Dirk was still happy that his deck was working the way it was designed.

My initial soldier build had no real design. There was no cool thing I was expecting to do every game when I was building it. It was just a solid tribal deck that wanted to win. Therefore, once the newness wore off, I didn’t play it that much. In fact, before I decided to retool it, it hadn’t even been looked at in forever and a half. I’m sure some of you have decks like this. You built it back in the day, you thought it was pretty cool, you won with it, and you shelved it. Take down some of those old boring decks and breathe some new life into them. Give them something cool to look forward to, like equipping a Catapult Squad
