CardShark Content - Chewie! Slate (7/20/2006)

Just so you know, text written like this is Chewie, your editor and casual player extraordinaire.

Text written like this is Brian, an on-again off-again writer for Cardshark and friend to your editor. The last time we went in together on an article like this, the italics went the other way around, so this whole curvy text thing is new to me. Bear with me.

The Coldsnap Prerelease was held just recently, and let me tell you something: Coldsnap is AWESOME. Not just awesome, but an almost euphoria-inducing sensation of delight that surpasses human description. It’s up there. He’s right. I really feel sorry for anyone who didn’t make it to the tournament. And that covers lots of people, because apparently no one went. The North Carolina Prerelease was obviously and painfully low on attendance. It wasn’t hot, there was room to maneuver, and they were running 16 person flights. In short, it was really great, but it was still sad to see that much empty space in the room.

Chewie and I discussed this phenomenon several times throughout the day, and the best excuse I could make for those poor souls who did not come was a confusion about the date of the Prerelease, since the extra set also messed with the date for the Dissension Prerelease. To those of you who hope that this ignorance will continue, be warned: this set contains several tournament-worthy cards that will impact Standard for the next 2 years.

In the individual flights, there were 5 members of my play group in a 16 person flight. I built a G/B deck with lots of removal and fatties. In the first round I played Mike (of Prerelease Survival Guide fame), who also had a G/B deck. Panglacial Wurm

nabbed me game 3. That thing is nuts. So I took the round, but only barely. Round two I played Dirk. Game one he got mana screwed. Game two I got mana screwed. We were gearing up for an excellent game three when I got SEVERELY mana flooded. I drew 11 lands and 5 non-lands over the course of the game. One of those non-lands was a Mishra

’s Bauble, so it barely even counts! In the third round I played a guy who beat me honestly the first game, then just murdered me while I drew 10 lands and 5 non-lands in game two. I had 18 land in a 42 card deck, this was a statistical impossibility! Since I was 1-2, I dropped from the flight. Out of the 5 of us who entered the flight, 3 of us went 2-1-1 and ended up with 3 packs. Not bad. I also won a free Coldsnap pack when they called my raffle ticket number. (ouch). I had to play Mike (yes, the same, which was somewhat expected in a 16 person flight) and we ended up drawing after ending up with both of us at 1 life at the end of overtime of the third game. I realized that I needed to win every game from then out to earn product, and that’s exactly what happened. My remaining rounds weren’t much to talk about, especially after the intense back-and-forth action of the second round.

After a quick lunch, where Magic, Star Trek, and movies based on comic books were the main topics of discussion (oh yeah, we’re definitely dorks), three of the five headed back into the fray. With attendance so low, we had no idea if there would be a second Two-Headed Giant flight or not, but we were hopeful. It turns out there was already a second 2HG flight, so we signed up for the third one. They only needed one more team to make it playable, so we sat down to waste some time. Dirk signed up for individual flight 8, which was just under halfway full. Forty minutes later, we were all still sitting and waiting. We decided to wait another thirty minutes, then either join Dirk in flight 8, or all get our refunds and head home. Not long after we issued this ultimatum amongst ourselves, they announced that the third 2HG flight was starting. We bid Dirk adieu and headed to our seats. Not long after we started building our decks, Dirk’s flight finally started, so no one was sitting around bored anymore.

We had so much good stuff that we just didn’t know what to do. Since 2HG became a sanctioned format, Brian and I have been a team. He’s the primary head, I’m the secondary head. He has the slower, control-oriented deck, and I have the slower, beatdown oriented deck. Yes, I know that they both say slower. Two-Headed Giant is not a fast format by any means, and we usually tend to focus on the long game rather than the early game.

As a quick note for those who hopefully came here to take something away from this article about 2HG, playing too aggressively (and building decks in that direction) is a common mistake that I see players make in this format. Aggression

itself is fine, but against 40 life, your decks (yes, both) need to have long-term options. As you will see below, first blood isn’t as important as last blood drawn.

told us that we needed to play Green and White together. Yes, it’s just that good. Indeed. Then we naturally put Black and Red together. We were initially going to drop Blue, but there was just so much good stuff that we couldn’t do it. In the interest of using as much of the good blue stuff as possible, we split it up between the decks. This pushed us each into three colors, making us a little less consistent and reliable, but upped the power level of our decks considerably. And, as I said above, Two-Headed Giant is a late-game format, so not only is it possible to draw out of color-screw, it’s highly probable. Just so you don’t get frustrated when building your own decks, thinking that we reached these conclusions quickly is incorrect. These decks were the result of a LOT of thinking and sounding strategies out. Just because it takes time doesn’t mean it’s not worth the end result. Anyway, here are the decks we ended up with.

So there you have it. Both decks are a little over 40 cards, because once again, there’s plenty of time to draw into stuff. Admittedly, there are a couple cards in each deck that never actually did anything (Counterbalance

Round 1
We were playing against an engaged couple who seemed to have a relatively good handle on the game and the format. They started off with some pretty heavy early beatdown. They managed to take us all the way down to 12 life points before we stabilized. Our Adarkar Windform

We are still at 12 at this point, and one attack could potentially destroy us. . I could immediately tell that it was the right choice because the Taskmage’s controller put his head in his hands, trying to think of a response. None came. I suddenly realize what was really going on, and I am so happy that my partner is paying attention that I promptly reach over and give him a big kiss on the cheek. You see, they were going to wait for us to declare attack and tap down our only attacker, then hopefully swing for the win on turn 5.

Turn 4: We look at each other, at our opponents, and at each other again. Brian says “Declare attack” while I reach out for the remaining Musher. If they have any sort of answer, this game is going to be a draw, because their terrible beastie won’t kill us. I turn the Musher sideways, and our opponents admit defeat. Massive celebration ensues. The people rejoice. There was no cake, sadly. And those responsible for the lack of cake will DIE! I mean, um, bring the cake next time.

Since game one went to time plus 4 out of 5 turns, there wasn’t much time until round two, and I really had to pee. There was a wedding reception down the hall (we were at the Marriott) that had blocked the way to the bathroom. So Dirk and I decide we’ll go through the non-emergency emergency exit, jog around the building, and head in the first door we find, and desperately search for a bathroom. After doing so, we jog back, and I get back to the table just in time to start.

on it. Not the worst possible turn of events, but we really felt stupid. This is where we realized that not all Magic players think the same way. For some reason, Brian and I assumed they would rather have a 4/4 attacker than a 3/5 that can block flying, especially since we had no flying creatures on the board, and no real threats either. So we made a dumb play. But it was pretty much our last dumb play of the tournament. We tried later to kill the stupid Spider by blocking it with two creatures and using Swift Maneuver

, which once again kept the stupid Spider alive and kicking. I really hated that Spider.

I have to say at this point that these were not bad players, but if anything they weren’t aggressive enough. I know that I mentioned earlier how short-term aggression doesn’t really pan out, but sooner or later you have to take them from 40 to 0. They were content to sit back on their large spider as a potential blocker for 2 or three turns before attacking with him at all, despite our lack of creatures. Don’t assume that you have all the time in the world to be aggressive, because these games don’t always go according to your plan.

would be a better choice, as it represented mass removal. When I showed him the two red cards in my hand again, he agreed. Same cards as last time. In my hand, the whole game. Not that it mattered. What follows is one of the most ridiculous plays I have personally ever seen. I look around the board, figure out what our opponents will most likely do, and start doing some math. I went to school for physics, that takes lots of math skills. I realize that if they do what I think they’re going to do, we can completely wipe their board while leaving ours relatively intact. Brian has a degree in English, and it’s hard to understand these complex calculations explained in hurried whispers. He decides to just let me handle it, confidant that I could, in fact, add. My exact words were, “sure, if you say so,” not because I did not have confidence but instead because I trusted Chewie enough that I figured it will take too long to hear his strategy and that I would probably not quite understand it anyway. I do tend to talk quickly when I get excited, and I’m not all that intelligible under normal circumstances.

Another aside here, I have to say that Brian is getting better at falsifying information through facial expression. In previous 2HG tournaments, he would get excited when he drew a card that could knock us out of a bad spot. I try to maintain a face of bleak acceptance; it tends to make people assume that I’m not getting good stuff. He used to also point to cards in his hand and then cards in play and grin. Here lately, he’s gotten better about lying about things and improving his poker face. He’ll point to a card in my hand, such as a land or an uncastable creature, and say that we should wait. Any time someone would attack us, he would consider our hands full of nothing useful and decide that yes, we could stand to take 3 more damage. I did have to almost stab him three times because he almost forgot to pay the cumulative upkeep on something, but that happens to everyone.

From there it was pretty much a one-sided game. One of the members of the team was completely mana-screwed. He had 3 lands out when he cast Surging Might

So now we’re 3-0, dead tired, and wondering where everyone has gone. Half of the 2HG flight has up and left, making pairings exceptionally hard. The only way they can do it is to give the other team that’s 3-0 a bye, which we find decidedly disgusting. We agree to intentionally draw with the team that we’re paired with, who is either 2-1 or 2-0-1. This leaves us with a record of 3-0-1 and prize payout of 22 packs of Coldsnap.
