The Winston Draft - Chewie! Slate (2/4/2007)

Let’s say you just bought a Fat Pack of some sort. Now what? Of course, you’re going to open it up, check out the novel, flip through the Player’s Guide, and admire the art on the separators. That goes without saying. No kidding you’re probably going to open up the cardboard bit that went around the whole thing to check out the poster art on the interior. But what are you going to do with those six packs?

Oh sure, you could just open them up and marvel at the cards inside, but that just lacks something. After all, when will you ever use, for example, those Castle

again? In all honesty, you probably won’t. They’ll get relegated to a stack of commons, or turned into proxies, or used to line the birdcage. Polly want a common?

You could always use those six boosters to practice your Sealed deckbuilding skills. However, without other Sealed decks to play against, it’s kind of a pointless endeavor. If another friend also has six packs, this idea will work. But that’s a highly specialized occasion, isn’t it? What if you really want to do some Sealed practice with your friend, but said friend is either too broke or too stingy to buy a Fat Pack for himself? Surely you’re not going to buy a second Fat Pack. Who needs two of the same Magic novel?

I know what you could do! You could do some Pack Wars with a friend!

*put the cartoon crickets chirping here for the full effect*

I hate Pack Wars. No matter how it’s done. No matter which rules set is used (and there are lots of different ways to have Pack Wars). So much hate. Pack Wars are entirely reliant on what cards are in the pack. There is no skill involved. Just blind luck. And my luck sucks. Hard.

Just to make one more bid for something to do with your six packs, you could do a bizarre Pack Wars – Sealed hybrid that uses three packs apiece. But that’s just silly. No really, try it sometime. You’ll see.

So what do you do with the six packs you got in your Fat Pack? If you’ve read the title of the article, you should be able to figure out what I’m going to say here. It’s called a Winston Draft, first invented by the man himself – Richard Garfield. For those of you that don’t know, he’s the guy what invented this little game called Magic that we all play and love. I first read about the Winston Draft on the Magic website in early 2005, in an article by Aaron Forsythe. Feel free to check it out if you like. I’m going to cover the procedure and history here though, so it’s not a required read.

Living in North Carolina, the name Winston conjures up many things, including stock car racing and the city just north of me (Winston-Salem). For me, the main image is that of a cigarette pack (and no, I don’t smoke). Winston cigarettes are made right here in NC, roughly a 30-40 minute highway drive from my house. In fact, I’ve done a fair bit of contract work for the company that makes Winston, RJ Reynolds. So what? Well, back in the day, Richard Garfield was trying to come up with a way to do one-on-one drafts that involved more than luck and/or hate-drafting. While trying to design a procedure, he was using a deck of normal playing cards. The particular deck he was using just happened to be cards with the Winston logo on them, straight from RJ Reynolds here in my ‘hood. Once he came up with a draft procedure he liked, he named it after the deck of cards, and the Winston Draft was born. History lesson over. Now for the procedure. Here’s how Aaron Forsythe explained it in his article, which is much simpler than the rambling and murky explanation that I typed out a few minutes ago that has since been deleted. My comments are in parentheses.

1. Shuffle all 90 cards together in one big deck without looking at them.
2. Choose someone to draft first, then put the top three cards from the deck face down next to it as three new small piles of one card each.
3. The first player looks at the first small pile. He may choose to draft that pile or not.
4. If he drafts it, he replaces that pile with a new face-down card from the deck.
5. If he doesn't draft it, he puts it back, adds a new card from the deck face down, and moves on to the next pile.
6. He looks at that pile and decides to draft it or not, replacing it with a new card if he drafts it, adding a new card to it and moving on if he doesn't.
7. If he doesn't want to draft the third pile, he adds a card to it, then drafts a random card from the top of the deck. (Known in my circle of dorks as going pot-luck)
8. Continue until all 90 cards have been drafted. Construct 40-card decks and play.

Remember, drafting is done by pile. If you decide you want a pile, you have to take the whole thing whether you like it or not. And trust me – you’ll get some pretty big piles that are full of bad cards, decent cards, and cards that just don’t seem to work in Limited. Eventually, one of two things will happen. One awesome card will show up in one of these crap piles and you’ll draft it. If it’s in your colors, you’ll be happy to play it. If it’s not in your colors, you’ll be happy to not be playing against it. If that’s not the case, then you’ll realize that a good amount of the filler in the crap pile is actually on-color for you, and you’ll draft it just so you’ll have more options.

So let’s have a sample draft. I managed to talk poor Dirk into helping me out. Winston Drafting is a lot of fun (I got a box of Time Spiral

It’s boring to me, and I’m the one doing the writing! But since the Dirk was kind enough to wait for me to do all this, there’s one sample game coming up. Dirk went first, and he took the first pile.

We shut up and get to building. I end up with this fairly ridiculous black and red removal-heavy deck. This is totally my style when it comes to Limited.

I realize that I've been droning on a long time now, so I'm going to forgo the usual highly-detailed game-by-game analysis. Let's just say that Pardic Dragon

actually won game 2 for me, and my ridiculous amount of removal pretty much did the rest. I suspended the Dragon when Dirk had just one or two cards in hand and forced him into top-deck mode. When he drew a land the second time, the Dragon resolved and flew over for the win. Dirk ended up playing green and white. It was actually not a bad deck at all, it just couldn't withstand the sheer amount of removal that I managed to grab up.

This sample draft wasn't meant to give you a play-by-play of the games, it was meant to show you some of the strategies that go into a Winston Draft. In every Winston I have done, there is invariably a Large Pile of Crap That No One Wants. If there aren't any cards in a pile that are good enough to warrant being drafted by themselves, I tend to just leave them there. Eventually one of three things will happen. Either your opponent will take it, or you'll finally see something you like and take it, or you'll realize that this Large Pile of Crap has about 3 or so cards that are pretty decent filler, even if they're not so hot individually.

For example, in Pick 6 I took the Large Pile because there were 3 in-color cards and one card that would end up being on-theme (Venser's Sliver

) even though I didn't know that at the time. In Pick 18, I took the Large Pile because it was late in the draft and there were two bits of mana fixing and a decent in-color card. In both cases, there weren't any cards worth hate-drafting, just some decent filler for Dirk too. Decent filler that he didn't get around to nabbing, that is.

There are a couple major pitfalls in the Winston Draft that I've discovered thus far. If you concentrate on only taking good cards in a given color or combination of colors that you don't actually obtain enough cards in your chosen colors to finish out your deck. There's nothing worse than trying to put 24 or so cards in a deck and realizing you're going to have to do an unintentional splash. That REALLY sucks. So don't be so focused on GOOD cards that you miss out on PLAYABLE cards.

The other major pitfall of a Winston Draft is even worse: Trying to force a color. The format really doesn't allow it. If you get your heart set on a certain color, you're going to end up ignoring the playable stuff in other colors. My last Winston was Coldsnap, and I ended up playing this horrible 3 color mess because I was sure that I would be going black. I passed up lots of really good white and a fair amount of playable green because I kept waiting on the black cards to show up. I ended up playing a really gimpy GWR deck that wasn't planned out at all. I just threw all the green, white, and red together, weeded out the absolute crap, and played it as it was. It was pretty sad.

Well now that you're all sick of reading, I sincerely hope that you give this a shot once. The next time you win packs at a FNM, the next time you see an old set on sale cheap, the next time you buy a Fat Pack...don't forget to give the old Winston Draft a shot. It really is a lot of fun, and it lets you work on your Limited deckbuilding skills without having to assemble 7 other people for a draft or pony up the cash for 12 packs per Sealed practice session. And besides, it beats the crap out of Pack Wars.
