Two-Headed States 2007 - Chewie! Slate (3/30/2007)

Your lovable editor Chewie here with another bit of Two-Headed goodness. As you may know, the Two-Headed Giant States tournaments were held just a while ago. [Editor's note: Actually a fair bit ago, but I've been busy and sick. My bad.] And in case you couldn’t tell from some of my previous articles, I really love 2HG. Here with me today is my partner (and dominant head of the team), Brian. Say hello B.

Hello, all you Cardshark reading people out there. I’m Chewie’s partner head, Brian “B” Baker. You can tell when I’m putting in my two cent’s worth when you see this here slanty writing stuff.

Ooo, slanty writing. You’re getting good at that.

Thank you.

The day starts with deck registration. We opened some stuff that was just amazing. We’re talking Damnation

here. But looking back on the pool after we registered it, Brian and I realized that this is the sort of pull we’d want if we were opening packs. I mean, who wouldn’t want to open that pair of rares I just mentioned? As far as the actual tournament was concerned, I don’t really think the stuff we registered was all that powerful. There were some bombs, but it wasn’t the most consistent or stable pool available. B?

I would have to agree. Aside from the Damnation

, this pool didn’t have much in the way of removal. There were no decent finishers to close the deal, which are all-important in a format where both sides can lay down between two and six blockers in a single turn. Overall, I missed passing the big D, but the rest of the registered pool was nothing to shed a tear over.

After getting the stuff we were actually going to be playing, I was psyched.

I too was psyched. We opened quite a bit of good stuff. We went through our usual routine of removing the worst cards, then looking to see which colors belonged in the same deck based on gold cards and cards that rewarded such pairings (such as Hedge Troll

in a White-Blue deck). After that, we are left with two very large decks, from which we eliminate all but the best, most synergetic cards. This last part really felt like we were pulling teeth this time, since we were removing some good cards, but we were left with only the best.

It’s worth noting that we looked at the slivers in our pool and decided quite deliberately to not run any. The thought process was that they were not good enough to include on their own, and we didn’t want to add any power to any sliver decks we came across. An alternate school of thought on the subject would be to include a few to leach off of any strong sliver decks that we faced, but this would mean having sub-par cards in our decks against any other opponent. We made our decision and stuck with it, but I wanted to point this out just to illustrate that even though we’ve been doing this for a while we still have tough calls to make every time.

We're really hungry, but we don't have time to go get food before the next round starts. That kinda sucks, but we soldier on! I tell Brian that if we manage to win the next round with enough time to spare, we'll go grab something to eat for sure.

Chewie knows better than to promise me food and then take it away, as eating is one of my favorite activities, so I take him at is word. Finding time to get sustenance at these tournaments is always kind of tricky.

These guys were the stereotypical grizzled veterans. They asked us how many Magic tourneys we play in, and if we ever made it out to the Midwest for a tournament. They were pretty serious about it. They were also pretty nice guys. Come to think of it, nearly all of our opponents were pretty decent fellows. Nearly. More on that later though.

Hey, we managed to win this one in about 30 minutes! We make a quick fast-food run, taking the time to sit down at the place and eat (gasp!), and get back with plenty of time to spare. Nice. Having eaten, I feel ready to tackle an afternoon of Magic without feeling tempted to eat the cards.

I really like these guys. One of them is always happy, and the other one was wearing a t-shirt that explained all the myriad of ways to use the F-word. Like I said, I really like these guys. However, their decks didn't like us back.

Here's how it went on their side of the table.

Record: 4-1-1

We take some time to consult the standings and see that we are currently still in contention. We have 13 points. If everyone plays, there would have been one team with 18, and the rest would be sitting at 16 (the memories of this are a little shaky, but we figured everyone would be playing for the Top 4). It just so happens that two teams decided to ID into 16 points, so that's the maximum that anyone would have had. Our tiebreakers look pretty good, so we're playing for a shot at the Top 4! To be honest, I knew we had a shot, but I really never expected to get this far. Brian was a bit more confident than I was, but surely this must have surprised him too. I was surprised, but around our third win, I felt so in control and proud of our decks that I really wanted to go all the way.

, and it catches a big faceful of Dead. When Brian searches his deck and offers it to his opponent for a cut, the guy cuts it and hands it back. His teammate says “Shuffle it.” Brian points out that he already cut it and handed it back. This guy (let's call him Jerk, for reasons that will soon be obvious) (unfortunately, his real name is Brian, NO relation) calls for a judge. Brian and I are totally perplexed. For some reason, he seems to think that shuffling is required at all times, and is completely adamant that his teammate take the deck back and shuffle it. The judge sets him straight, and the game continues.

Let me pause a moment. This guy is every single reason that I dislike playing Magic competitively. He's a great player, he's always right, and he knows the rules way better than his opponents. At least, that's what he seems to think. I'm not going to go into the boring details (and they're boring, trust me), but I really despise this guy. Over the course of this short game, he accuses us of:

Not saying which of his attacking creatures we blocked (even though his teammate even said we did)
Not announcing when we gain one life due to Paradise Plume

(once, mind you) (which we did, but he promptly ignored us, ‘cause he’s that good)
Not knowing the rules of the freakin' game

I will also interject. Even without the insulting way that he accused us, his behavior was just mean and immature. Keep in mind that even though Magic is a game of strategy and there isn’t anything wrong with playing to win, it is still a social event. Being polite goes a long way. Luckily for us, this is the only ill-mannered player we had to play all evening.

Okay, maybe you get a few details. They attacked with a couple slivers. They have double strike, vigilance, and the Quilled ability. We block the Synchronous Sliver

is dead due to the Quilled ability. We try to explain that when they stacked first strike damage, the ping had already been prevented. Jerk refuses to listen and calls a judge over. He begins explaining what you just read. When he gets to the point where he stacked first strike damage, he says “Oh, sorry, never mind.” Of course, before that he tried to claim that we blocked their Quilled guy instead of the Sync guy, which we plainly said (and again, his teammate agreed with us).

One more thing. When we flash back the Thrill (because the Stonecloaker

. Brian announced it and wrote it down. Jerk was too busy living up to his name to hear it. When he says what life he has us at, we correct him. Obviously ticked, he tells us to please announce when we're going to gain any life. I respond with this: “We do. Just like we announce which creatures we're blocking.” I'll let Brian jump in here.

I’m positive that I announced it, but he just kind of stared. Perhaps the concept was too difficult.

So with that last bad game aside, we end up 4-2-1. Jerk has the unadulterated gall to ask us to keep the fact that we lost a secret just in case it matters. After resisting the urge to yell out at the top of our lungs “HEY EVERYONE, WE LOST!”, Brian and I turn to walk away. Note that Jerk never bothered to apologize for being such a, well, a jerk. A judge asks us how we did, and we tell him while standing in front of Jerk. I think it's great, personally.

It turns out that their tiebreakers weren't good enough to make the Top 4 (so sad) and we end up 11th out of 51 teams. Not bad really.

Overall, despite not making top 4, I had a wonderful time. Two-Headed Giant is a mucho-fun format, and having a partner like Chewie always makes for a memorable time. We did relatively well, we still learn something every time, and we got a Stuffy Doll
