Grizzly Bear Perpetual Draft Format - Clay Schubert (1/27/2007)

The Origin:

I love playing with my wacky combo decks. I love stomping the opponent with ruthless agro decks. I love irritating the entire playgroup with control decks. But after a while, they get kinda old. With our playgroup, it’s a constant battle of crazy powerhouse decks, or races to who can assemble their combo the quickest. We tried new forms, like free-Magic, or peasant Magic. They were fun, but they just didn’t seem to hold my attention.

Well, one day I was looking at one of my favorite creatures, the Grizzly Bear, and that got me thinking. I went to the big box of “junk” cards that I had. These cards came from drafts, packs, and who knows else. They just sat in a box, feeling jealous of the Serra Angel

s seeing action in my decks. They didn’t even get the dignity of being sleeved. After pulling out a bunch of cards, I then went to the local comic/gaming store, and sat down with their box of bulk commons. After I gathered about 800 cards, I introduced the new version of Magic at the next playgroup. It was a big hit. After playing a whole lot of rounds, and changes, I think we found a format that provided incredible hours of enjoyment. We called it the Grizzly Bear format – in honor of a card that kind of defines much of the format.

The Concept:

While you’re playing in a draft, you’re not exactly playing with the best set of cards. Most likely, you’re not going to have a turn 3 Rumbling Slum

you have in your deck. I’ve found in those types of games it’s a lot more intense. You don’t have much, and you need to stretch it out, and almost pull off miracles. Winning a close draft game I’ve found is more rewarding than pulling off flawless victory in your playgroup.

This format is designed to try and capture that “draft” like feel. It’s a place where you and your opponent duke it out more with your wits than with the number of powerhouse rares your wallet can afford. Imagine your opponent’s saying ‘oh crap’ when you drop a Hill Giant

The Rules (With the logic behind them in parenthesis).
It plays just like regular magic, with a few exceptions.

1. There is a common library that all players share. (You can have all the players in the playgroup donate cards, or you can supply them yourself. The reason of having one giant library is that no player really has an advantage over the other players because everyone has the same card pool. In addition, a shared library makes cards like Sage Owl

2. There is a common graveyard that all players share. (This makes cards like Gravedigger

, and all that much more exciting. Same logic as rule #1)

3. During each player’s draw step, that player draws 2 cards. Each player begins the game with 4 cards in his or her hand. The very first player only draws one card on that first turn. (Two cards a turn speeds the game up, and gives people more options for cards to play. You get the advantage of going first, you get set back 1 card. )

4. Maximum hand size is 6 (This prevents stockpiling)

5. Each player begins the game with seven lands in play. One of each basic type, and two “Super Lands” land with “Tap: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.” Lands cannot leave play, and cannot change controllers. (It makes sure nobody gets mana screwed, but adds the element of mana-management into it.)

6. All players have “Pay 2 colorless mana and discard two cards from your hand. Put a 2/2 green bear creature token into play. Play this ability as a sorcery.” (In case you get stuck with really crappy cards, you can trade them in for something useful.)

7. If a card would allow a player to search a graveyard or library, that player may look at the top 20 cards only. (Imagine how long it would take to look through 800 cards to find a creature you like.)

8. Don’t play with cards with flashback. (We came up with a complicated ruling for Flash

back. It’s do-able, but it just makes it that much easier to not use them.)

9. Threshold = 20 cards per player. For two players, threshold is 40 cards. For three players, it’s 60, etc.

What cards to use:
This is the hardest thing to describe. As you play the format, you definitely get a feel for the cards. I never thought Righteous Cause
