The Walls Between Us - Clay Schubert (3/10/2008)

I’m sure you’ve heard of the old adage “the best defense is a good offense.” Well, that saying has nothing to do with this article. See, “the best defense is a good defense” just doesn’t have the same ring. But anyway, this article is all about defenders. At the end, there is a deck. It has probably the most surprising kill condition ever: your opponent is killed by attacking into your wall.
There are a lot of useful things to block with, but I’m going to focus on creatures that are solely dedicated to blocking. I’m ignoring, for the most part, creatures with regeneration, because that’s “duh.” I’m also ignoring creature with vigilance, again, it’s “duh.” With the exception of three creatures, all these creatures have defender.
When should you dedicate a card in your deck to solely defend? Well, the times I’ve found myself using cards that are dedicated to blocking is when I need to keep myself alive until my threats can come out and do their thing. Sure, a Grizzly Bear can block, but when you need time to get out a large fattie, and you’re facing an turbo goblin deck, a Wall of Hope
