CardShark Content - Colin Martz (6/2/2004)

On Saturday, May 22 I entered my local Fifth Dawn prerelease, and was very happy to experience the set's limited gameplay. I debated on creating a fun, five-color deck, but in the end I went with my two strongest colors, white and green, though many people did very well in the tournament with such decks. Thanks to a solid set of commons and uncommons (as well as two bomb rares, Beacon of Immortality

) I received fifth place upon the conclusion of the tournament. My overall impression of Fifth Dawn was that it will provide exciting limited play, though it will not have a significant impact in constructed formats. Enough about my experiences, this article will review the first half of the set's green cards. The cards will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the worst and 5 being exceptional. Please remember that these are my opinions, and that nearly all magic cards can be manipulated in ways that will turn a game in your favor. Now, let's begin...

from the game.

Limited Value: 3 - This card can surely turn the game in your favor if you are playing a five-color deck, but keep in mind that it will also help your opponent. Luckily, it is quite splashable, as with five colors you may only have 1 or 2 of a certain land in play, though there are plenty of cards that produce mana of any color in this set.

Constructed Value: 1.5 - I don't believe that there are enough amazing five-colored or sunburst cards in this set to make any domain deck viable in a standard environment, though Fist of Suns

back into its owner's library instead of putting it into its owner's graveyard.

Limited Value: 4 - The green beacon is a splashable card that will often produce 4 or 5 1/1 insect tokens, which are quite useful for chump-blocking or overrunning an opponent for the win. It shuffles back into your library, so the longer the game goes on, the greater chance you have of drawing it multiple times. Overall, it is a solid rare, though the other beacons can be more powerful, depending on the situation.

Constructed: 1.5 - Unless you can find some way to abuse this card, it is fairly mediocre and slow in standard environments. Decks such as goblins and ravager affinity will tear you apart before you can cast this spell, and it just won't help you as much as it can in limited.

or various artifacts that exist in the set, so you could even play the Green Bringer in a deck of 1 or 2 colors. If successfully cast, this bomb will devastate your opponent, as do many of the Bringers. You will soon be able to amass a group of 3/3 beast tokens to complete the task, and the Bringer itself has a body of its own, along with trample.

Constructed Value: 2 - The only way that any of the Bringers will be played in constructed is by utilizing fast cards and combos that will allow you to have one mana of each color of magic. This can be accomplished, and during the prerelease I witnessed a game in which a Bringer was cast on the third turn, via three different lands and a second-turn Pentad Prism

Limited Value: 3.5 - This card is perfect for casting powerful sunburst cards, as it guarantees you 3 colors of mana. It also gets you closer to being able to cast expensive creatures and spells that boost your chances of winning. I found it very useful during the prerelease event, and it was quite common among other players as well.
