CardShark Content - Colin Martz (7/1/2004)

This article will continue my comprehensive review of the newest expansion of Magic cards, Fifth Dawn, specifically exploring the play values of the first half of its red cards. Unfortunately, red is one of Fifth Dawn's weakest colors, with very few first-pick draft cards or constructed worthy cards. As always, each card will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the worst and 5 being exceptional, and then be given a short description of its play value in both limited and constructed formats. Please keep in mind that all statements in this article are my opinions, which are based on my experiences (as well as those of others) in DCI sanctioned tournaments involving Fifth Dawn. Now, let's begin...

is not quite as powerful as a few of its brethren , namely the Beacons of Immortality, Creation and Tomorrows. Nevertheless, it is a solid burn spell in this format which is likely to turn the tides of a game, especially if you can manage to play it more than once with its shuffles-into-your-deck ability after it is cast. I would rather have a few Shrapnel Blast

s in my deck, as they possess the element of speed.

Constructed Value: 2.5 - As I mentioned before, there are many other burn spells that have much lower mana costs, therefore they can be played early on. Decks that rely on burn spells strive to decimate their opponents quickly with an avalanche of cheap burn spells and fast, powerful creatures. With this fact in mind, most players would rather play a card that hits the table fast- a sligh or burn deck would not have time to wait for the Beacon to resurface from their library.

Limited Value: 3 - In my opinion, the red Bringer may be the most powerful of its cycle, as it allows you to use your opponent's creatures against them or simply sacrifice them to a card such as Grab the Reins

Constructed Value: 2 - The only way that any of the Bringers will be played in constructed is by utilizing speedy cards and combos that can produce the five colors of magic, and play this beast of a creature at an early time. Do not even think of hardcasting a Bringer in this format, as games rarely drag on that long.
