CardShark Content - Corey Carter (6/2/2005)

Greetings fellow dorks! I’ve been pulled back in from a long article drought by a request on the forums for a ping deck (thanks to King Honkey for making me feel needed). The deck I’m about to present, like many of my favorite decks, is the product of a long evolution reaching back many years. This deck has undergone many modifications and overhauls over it life, starting as a blue/green deck and shifting to straight blue and finally blue/red with the recent addition of red pinging creatures that are worth playing. I suppose I should pause in case there is anyone out there who isn’t familiar with the term ping. In magic terms ping or pinging is the act of one creature somehow dealing one point of damage to another creature or player outside of combat. The classic example is Prodigal Sorcerer

bounces creatures, and Neko-Te locks creatures down. Most important of the enhancers is Pemmin’s Aura, this enchantment is perhaps one of the best ones out there and is particularly effective when used with pingers. Its primary use is using its first ability, U: Untap enchanted creature, this can be devastating as you can pour any unused blue mana into untapping and dealing more damage. But this cards usefulness doesn’t end there its second ability, U: Enchanted creature gains flying until end of turn, can be useful for emergency blocking or in a pinch to get a giant War Elemental

over the opponents defenders. The third ability, U: Enchanted creature can’t be the target of spells or abilities this turn, help to protect the creature from direct damage and removal. Finally the last ability, 1: Enchanted creature get +1/-1 or -1/+1 until end of turn, is very useful for preventing creature death due to mass -1/-1 abilities.

Well, that covers all the cards but now for the hard part…how to play the deck. Make sure you don’t pile all of the creature enchantments on one creature, as this would make it a target and cause you to lose too many resources. Although you’ll want to have certain pingers specialize in certain things the guy enchanted with Charisma

will go on pingers that are aiming for the opponents directly rather than their creatures. Neko-Te is useful in both areas as is Pemmin’s Aura. The most important thing to remember is that all the creature abilities are instant speed so they can be played at the end of the last opponent’s turn (right before your turn). This leaves your pingers open to remove attackers or defenders and it also lets you leave mana open for protection or extra untaps. In multiplayer I’ve found that the threat of massive damage is usually just as good as actually doing that damage. No one is going to attack you if they know that most of their creatures will die, be stolen, or be returned to hand. But as with all decks of this type the possibility of lockdown will make you an instant target, so let you opponents play creatures, attack each other, and have fun. This is most important since having fun is what multiplayer is really about; games should be fun not work.

That’s all I’ve got for now, though I feel a renewed interested in many of my old decks, so perhaps I’ll be back here sooner rather than later. But until then have fun and play multiplayer!
