Pauper Standard on Magic Online - Craig Larson (2/26/2009)

I was browsing through the articles on Cardshark.com and after a few searches was surprised to see literally nothing about the Pauper format on Magic Online. For those who have never heard of Pauper, it's a constructed format where only commons are allowed. This should not be confused with Peasant Magic where 5 uncommons are allowed. Wizards of the Coast currently only supports Classic Pauper, but there is a thriving community for Standard and Extended Pauper as well. Standard and Extended tournaments are all player-run events, and the best way to get started is to head over to PDCMagic.com to find a listing of the tournament schedules.

In this article, I'd like to focus on the oft ignored Pauper Standard format. If you've been playing Classic Pauper, you know that the prices of staple commons have risen significantly. For example, Crypt Rats

, is now going for around 2.5 tickets. For a common! Now I understand that the prices on Magic Online are pretty fluid, but paying twenty-five to fifty tickets for seventy-five commons is a bit ridiculous. Furthermore, there are only two and four man Pauper queues, and the occasional Premier Event (with prizes paid in Tenth Edition packs). Admittedly, this is far and above the support most unofficial formats (i.e. those formats besides Classic, Standard, and Extended) receive, but it still seems like better support, or a cheaper format would be better.

Standard Pauper fills this void, for cheap Magic addicts there probably isn't a better format. There is a diverse metagame consisting of at least thirty decks at the moment, and to top that off a good Standard Pauper deck will run you about three to four tickets. The only downside to this is that virtually no one on Magic Online knows that the format exists. Requests for Standard Pauper matches in the Tournament Practice room will often get replies such as, ´´No, I want to play Pauper.´´ or ´´What does that even mean?´´.

Invariably, you will eventually have to head over to /Join pdc (type it in any chatbox). This is the PDCMagic chat room, and you can ask someone there for a Standard match. But really the primary places to play Pauper Standard are the PDCMagic.com events (SPDC and MPDC). The events consist of three to four rounds of swiss with a cut to the top eight, and if someone donates it, there is a modest prize pool.

My first foray into the format was with BUG Rock. I decided to work with a list by Master_Bibby with a few modifications (I got rid of the Unmake

The basic game plan for this deck is to kill your opponent's guys and win with lots of card advantage. This is achieved by maxing out on cards that give you card advantage. The main weakness this deck has is that aggro decks can tend to walk all over it if they get aggressive enough hands, and with black creatures all over the format, Terror

(one of the hardest cards for this deck to deal with).

Overall, BUG Rock is a good deck to take if you're not sure what to play, as it has no horrible match-ups, but none are cake-walks either. If you're not going to play it, be ready to play against it as it's consistently in Standard Pauper Top 8s.

Another consistently placing deck with a similar strategy is ´´It's Just a Flesh Wound´´.

Rogues, and Esper. The thing to keep in mind though is that given the pool many decks don't quite fit into a particular archetype but are still competitive, compared to regular Standard where a particular archetype doesn't differ all that much from build to build. Because of this Pauper Standard provides a refreshing alternative at a price that can't be beat. So give it a try, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
