CardShark Content - Daniel Warehall (7/21/2005)

If you are like me, you have quite a few extra cards lying around that you'll never use again. Why not turn those cards into a deck that will annoy people?

Basically, my goal in this article is to build a deck out of inferior cards that can win about 50% against a target Tournament level deck. Why? Anyone can win with Jittes and the power cards, but real joy is beating someone down with a Mischievous Poltergeist

Flying Pay 1 life: Regenerate Mischievous Poltergeist.
. Every Magic Night has at least one guy parroting the latest tournament decks, and, sometimes not quite the latest tournament decks, who beats up the newbies who, in turn, build inferior copies of his deck, creating an environment, where everybody is playing the same type of deck. I hate that.

Okay, now to get to the point...

My goal is to build a deck out of cheap, usually inferior cards designed to beat a certain deck type. Of course, I have a few general rules...

1. The lousier and cheaper the cards in the deck the better.

2. The deck can't just be a blatant hose deck... It needs to appear like a normal deck.

3. The cards in the deck should be able to be purchased through this site for under $10.00.

4. It can't over-utilize any evasion abilities that are not available in the format of the deck it is designed to beat. It can't be all Shadow creatures, but it can include a couple.

5. It must be Vintage legal.

The goal for this article is Affinity artifact decks. Yeah, I know... That deck has been neutered. Of course, some of the kids at my local card shop still use it. Anyways, I decided to start off with an Affinity deck, because it was the first deck I played against after a five year lay off from Magic. This seems to be a pretty tough challenge, but the deck I saw didn't have Trample, so I decided to use Black, for the number of cheap Regenerating Creatures. Plus, beating Artifacts with Mono Black is a cool way to go... Early on, I decided to skip Dark Ritual

s can provide, and the fact that most things that give Card Advantage are out of this deck's price range, I decided to exploit some of the weaknesses I saw in the deck. First, there was no flying in the main deck. Next, All of the elimination is through damage, so the regenerators would stay on the board as long as I had the mana to keep them around.

Verdict

Basically, this is really a case of small sample size, but I was quite happy with how the deck turned out. Going in I was hoping to win two out of the five. After a few more games, it seemed to go about 50/50, so I'm satisfied. I could easily tune MBCC (Mono Black Crap Control) into a lean mean Affinity killing machine. When I broke it out for real, the looks on peoples' faces as I dropped the Spike Cannibal
