CardShark Content - Darik Dvorshak (3/16/2005)

Well I finally got to compete in a PTQ for this season. I'm in the US Army stationed in Germany so really wanted to get to Eindhoven Netherlands two weeks ago, but because of work and life commitments couldn't make it. Got to play this past weekend, 12 March 2005, in Xanten Germany, about 200 miles from my home near Frankfurt.

I played Affinity in a GP trials and an extended tourney recently. But the deck has too many weaknesses currently. I was manhandled by two different Mind's Desire

I used the deck that Mike Flores wrote about recently, Blue White Control deck that Shaheen Soorani won a PTQ with in Virginia.

Well I played almost that deck. You never read about what it takes to get together all the cards to play a deck. I had most of the deck as I played the white cycle version of this deck in GP Genova a couple years ago. But I did not have the pulse of the fields and I've only got 2 flooded plains. I was able to buy a Pulse, but substituted 2 more Adarkar for 2 of the Flood

.

To get to the tourney I figured I had to leave around 6AM or so to make sure I got there by 9:30. So fired up the laptop with GPS and Microsoft Autoroute(European version of Streets and Tips) and I was off. Had some snow to contend with and some wicked patches of the autobahn with accumulated ice, but made it by 9. GPS may be one of the greatest gifts to guys who hate to ask for directions.

The tourney was in a Youth Cultural Center. By 10 AM the published starting time there were only about 40-50 people there. But by the time we started there were at least 84, as there were 42 tables.

My first round I was at table 32 playing Stefan Urban.

My opening hand was fine, I had a brainstorm and 2 lands. He played Island

and I countered it, mistake. He then played a scepter with fire/ice. Ouch. As I look back now I should have conceded that game then. But played I played it out. I put a meddling mage out with fire, but the ice accumulated too many cards for him.

out. I stabilized at 4 life and won in extra turns with exalted dragon. Because of time it was a draw.

So, 0-0-1
Not the best of starts when the deck should beat scepter.

Game 2, I was at table 22 playing Renhold Kohl

Mono Black.

He got off two mesmeric fiends and I was in hurt mode. I was able to cunning wish for Pulse of the Fields

and then got out a dragon with soldier support to come back from 2 life and win.

Game 2 I had to mulligan and his discard ruined me. As well as the withered witch that took out my defenseless dragon.

Game 3 I could not get my second white mana to get off the wrath of god I had in my opening. His combination of discard and hand disruption rats was too much for me to overcome.

Really not a good match up for this deck. The hand disruption as well as the discard destroys a control deck. When I play this deck again I will include an Ivory Mask

main deck to shore up this weakness.

So 0-1-1, not quite 0-2 drop but pretty close

Round 3 I'm down at table 33 playing Florion Otto, He was about 13 or so playing a ravager deck.

Game 1 went to about turn 5 when I played cunning wish for rebuild and won with cycled soldiers.

turn 6.

1-1-1, so I'm still mathematically in it.

Round 4, I'm up to table 23 playing Christian Hottigen.

He was playing blue white as well. So we were doing the draw lay land go deal. He got off meddling mage naming cunning wish. Next turn he attacked with it and I cycled up 3 soldiers, blocked with 2 and bye bye mage. He plays another after attack phase. Next turn he attacks, I cycle up 4 soldiers and bye bye mage number 2. I got my mage out and won with a dragon.

Game 2 I put in the damping matrixes, rule of law and arcane laboratory. He did a scepter turn 2 with counterspell, but my turn 3 damping matrix shut him down. I won with soldiers.

2-1-1, my drive home is still being held off

Round 5 I played Benjamin Weiss at table 15.

Game 2 I had too much land and no wraths or Akroma's vengeance to save me.

Game 3 was a tight one. He mulled twice which gave me a distinct advantage. I ended up winning on my last extra turn with 3 hard cast decree angels.

3-1-1, wow 2 more wins and I make top 8...

Round 6 I'm up to table 9 against Frank Roelofs.

He was playing Tog.

Game 1 he had out a Quirion Elf and I put out an unmorphed angel. He played Armageddon

Game 2 I put in the rule of law and Arcane laboratory. Got them into play and cunning wished for forbid, the wished for capsize. Played that forbid 8 times I believe. Finally won with 3 cards in my library with cycled up soldiers protected by that forbid.

4-1-1, dang win one more match and I make top 8

Round 7 at table 5 playing Harald Stein, I'm 10th he's 9th

He was playing Macey Rock.

Game 1 was strange for my deck, I got 2 dragons on the table and beat him down.

I failed to properly sideboard here. The Damping matrixes should come in for his swords and treetop villages. I did not put them in.

Game 2 was over in 3 turns 2 Rancor

Game 3 I held on, but his treetop village ruled. I had a cunning wish opportunity but he had 3 cabal therapies in his graveyard and 2 creatures on the board.

Ahhh 4-2-1 and headed home through snow.

Some notes on the deck and its play.
