CardShark Content - Dave Andrews (10/22/2001)

I’m going to warn you up front – this report is pretty long for a 7-round limited PTQ report. I’ve included a pretty detailed description of some portions of the Top 8 Rochester Draft, which I wouldn’t normally do, but at this tournament it was actually pretty interesting. For those who haven’t participated in a Rochester Draft before, it might give a little indication of the intricacy and politics in the format, which is what makes Rochester Draft so interesting and skill-intensive. I also feel that it shows pretty well the effect that not paying very careful attention to the draft around you can have on your draft deck, and the deck of those around you. If not, well, at least I got to do a little bitching. :)

I’ll make up for the long draft narrative by skipping over intros right into the tournament. Here’s the card pool I received:

In the 2nd game, it was my turn to be mana screwed, as I sat with a hand full of white cards and a table full of mountains and forests. Once again I was the beneficiary of an opponent’s mana troubles, as Dan’s deck decided he needed no more than 3 mana. I was too far ahead for Dan to come back by the time he saw more mana. I did get a chance to see several 1-toughness critters from Dan’s deck, which prompted me to side in Magma Vein

Games: 10-1
Matches: 5-0

In Round 6, I took the intentional draw with Nick Novak, to insure that we would both make the Top 8. I was leaning towards playing in Round 7, knowing that I would still make it in with a loss, and that winning would give me my choice of draft seat. However, I got paired against John Honea for round 7, and while I don’t know him particularly well, I do know that he is a nice guy and a good sport, so when he offered the draw to cement his own Top 8 bid, I accepted.

In Round 7, my friend and sometimes playtesting partner Mike Stewart won, bringing his match total to 5-1-1. Mike was worried that if not all of the 5-1-1 players made it, he would not be in the Top 8, due to his poor tiebreakers. As it turned out, though, all the 5-1-1 players did make it in, and Mike made the Top 8 as the 8th seed. This was good news, not only because another friend made Top 8, but also because I had made it in as the 3rd seed, which meant that he would be sitting on my immediate left for the draft. In Rochester draft, it’s good to be sitting next to someone who at least knows how to draft, and even better that person isn’t going to actively fight against you in the draft.

Upon hearing the news, Mike was very excited, and said to me “Now we’ll be able to cooperate so we both get good draft decks.”

“Cooperate? Mike, my whole goal is to hate-draft you right out of the Top 8!”

Mike looked absolutely shocked. “No, dude, we have to cooperate! This is to qualify!”

“I’m kidding, Mike. I’m just teasing you. Of course we’ll cooperate.”

We sat down at the draft table. The goal: cooperate.

Pat Chapin, 1st seed in the Top 8 and Mike’s 1st round opponent, chose to have Mike open first. The contents of the first pack weren’t particularly amazing, and Mike started by drafting a black card. My first round opponent, drafting 3rd, selected a green card, and Chapin took something black. When it came around to my pick, my 1st round opponent was the only player to have selected a green card, due to the unusually poor selection of green cards in the first pack. With Mike on my left obviously intending to go black, I assumed he would also go blue, which has the best synergy with black. That took out any plan I might have had of going U/W or B/U, so I decided I would go ahead and announce my intention of being one of the green players, even though I knew more players would be entering into green soon. I wheeled a Timberland Ruins

The draft proceeded, with 4 players, sitting in every other seat, drafting green. Mike stayed mono-black for quite some time, while Chapin went into black-blue. My first round opponent was based in green, but was taking cards from every other color -- I hope he wasn’t hoping for Harrow

. Both players on my right were into red, with my immediate right drafting U/R and his right drafting G/R. That steered me away from G/R, and with my immediate right taking blue and Mike presumably taking blue, that left me in G/W. That color combination is tough, as it doesn’t have good removal, and doesn’t have a good way to achieve threshold, which both colors really need. However, that was what was available, so that’s what I drafted.

Then something occurred that bothered me. I picked up a Hallow

on the way back. I was annoyed, but not overly concerned. I figured that without a good pick available, Mike was just hate-drafting the best green card in the pack, not realizing that by the time it wheeled back, I was actually the one losing the most in the pack. I never imagined Mike was actually considering playing green, because that would make him the 5th green player at the table, sitting right between 2 green drafters, one of whom he was supposed to be cooperating with, and also because green likes threshold, whereas black likes to utilize graveyard cards, making it not nearly as synergistic as B/U, which certainly was available in Mike’s seat.

The draft proceeded, and I continued to draft G/W, while Mike stayed away from green cards for a while, reassuring me that the Disciple was just a misguided hate-draft that unintentionally hit the wrong target. I continued to feel that way until Mike made another erratic pick. During the 2nd set of packs, a Leaf Dancer

. Certainly Mike wasn’t planning on splashing green for a double-green casting-cost 2/2 when his first round opponent wasn’t even playing forests? That certainly appeared to be a definite hate-draft aimed right at me, and I was hot! I don’t remember what I picked, but I remember how I picked it – rapping hard on the table with my knuckles, shooting Mike a glare.

Not long after, I got a chance to send a clear message as a pack was wheeling back. With no quality green or white cards remaining, I very clearly hate-drafted a Dusk Imp

right in front of Mike, sending a clear message: If Mike chose not to cooperate, both of our decks would suffer. Mike didn’t meet my gaze as I snatched the Imp, but after that, things seemed to return to normal, with Mike picking black cards over green cards frequently after that. A short time later, when there were no quality green or white cards remaining and I had another chance to hate-draft, I took a random red card and left a Morgue Theft

for Mike. As far as I was concerned, everything was back on track.

When I say things were back on track, I mean that I thought Mike and I were straight on which of us was the green player. Things were definitely not on track as far as drafting a solid deck was concerned. At this point, my draft was turning out quite poorly for me. Not only was I stuck in G/W, a combination I wasn’t particularly happy with, but it seemed like all the good white cards were being opened on the opposite side of the table, and the green cards were of course hotly contested. was actually somewhat decent for my poor deck, and I was left with little choice but to build a cleric army. I was definitely unhappy that Mike had decided to go into green, which was a poor choice both for him and for me, but at least I felt better that he at least thought he was building a draft deck for himself. At least he wasn’t intentionally hate-drafting me, right? Then he randomly stole a Kirtar’s Desire from me as a pack was wheeling back, and at that point I decided I would choke the life out of him when the draft was over with.

Halfway through the 3rd set of packs, I was dejected. I had the defensive deck of all time, and could hold the table forever, but my “partner” to my left had stolen two potentially key offensive gems from me in Squirrel Nest

-toting opponents, but the Angel would do, just as long as I could set up my clerical defense in time, and I could draw the Angel in time.

As far as Mike goes, I’m not actually pissed. Yes, it was frustrating that he took some very key gems from me, but he wasn’t doing it on purpose – he had just made what I feel was a poor choice in drafting. All issues of cooperation aside, drafting blue would have been a much better choice for him, for multiple reasons. First, it is more synergistic with black. Second, he was the 5th green drafter at the table, and as deep as green is in Odyssey, it’s not that deep. Finally, even though the player to his left was drafting blue, he would have been much better off competing with that one player on his left for blue than competing with both players on his left and right for green, particularly considering that picks go to the left for 2/3 of the draft. It was unfortunate that his decision hurt my draft, but he got the worse end of the bargain – his deck didn’t turn out particularly strong, and he ended up losing in the quarterfinals.

Here’s how I built my draft deck:

early, and every turn I just played another cleric. My opponent was becoming frustrated trying to work around the wall of clerics, and I just kept drawing and playing more. I hope my opponent didn’t think I was laughing at him, but a small crowd had gathered for the conclusion of our match, and every time I’d topdeck and play another cleric the crowd would let out a gasp, and I couldn’t help but grin at the absurdity of it all. When the round ended, I was still at 17 life, with a long row of clerics on the table in front of me, and I won the match 1 game to 0.

in play, so even though I had more cards in my library than he did, I would run out of cards first if he just targeted me with the Broker’s ability a couple of times. I was in a race to take Pat’s final 11 points of life before my library ran out.

Pat had a Morbid Hunger

in his graveyard, and he cast it using flashback. I prevented the damage with my clerics, but the real damage was the 3 vital points of life he gained. I didn’t think I’d be able to finish in time, until I drew Twigwalker

to enhance a creature for the win. Of course, Pat was not foolish enough to make that play error, and he waited until damage was already on the stack to activate the Broker. Not only that, but it turned out that he had an Afflict

for the last attack, so even if he had made the error and given me the Burst, he would have been able to survive at 1 life. It was a long, tiring game, and the Army of Clerics came up short. I had lost the finals 0-3, and Pat deservedly qualified for San Diego.

I’ve been thinking about that game since it occurred, trying to discern if I could have played differently to result in a different outcome. Perhaps I should have sent some clerics into battle before the final all-out attack, playing a little more aggressively, but I can’t work out a solution, and I’m usually able to discover my play errors in retrospect. Definitely failing to play around Afflict

and allowing it to kill an elephant token hurt, and probably could have made the difference for that game. Does that mean I could have won the next 2 games and qualified? I’m not sure – I still feel the matchup was in Pat’s favor, although that last game did give me a little more confidence in the Army of Clerics deck versus Pat’s deck. Perhaps if I could have avoided Pat having the answer draw, and if I could have drawn the Angel earlier, I could have pulled out the next 2 games. Either way, I feel that I played pretty well, and was probably doomed to lose that matchup anyway. As I drove back to Kalamazoo that night, I was tired, but satisfied with a hard-played and fun day of Magic.
