CardShark Content - Doug Butcher (4/26/2005)

People say magic is a kid’s game. They are right and they are wrong. I’m 30 years old and I play. I got hooked into Magic back in college and the very first pack of cards I bought was a pack of Revised. I opened that pack not knowing really how to play the game except for a friend of mine explaining it to me. My first rare was a Millstone

he would get me started in Magic by giving me cards. He ended up giving over 1,000 cards. Granted they were land, commons, and uncommons. My favorite cards were the Kird Ape

. The next day I went to buy another pack and it was the first day that 4th Edition was released. So I got my 2 roommates involved in the game and we played all through college. It’s really sad to skip classes just to work on deck lists or brainstorm on new deck ideas, but we all did. Enough of reminiscing on the past, some of you who are reading this, were not even born yet.

On to today’s topic at hand: Standard Mono Black Control Beatdown

I know this topic has been covered to no end, but I feel that MBC can be a beatdown deck as well. Beatdowns do not have to be classified as huge fatties pounding your opponents in the face. This MBC Beatdown deck is more of a fat black weenie deck with some control.

Here is the deck list without further delay:

2 Swords of Fire/Ice

Most people look at this deck and say what is this pile? The more they play against it, the more they understand. Now I’m sure a lot of you are looking at this and questioning the madness of some of the cards. I will now discuss the questionable cards.

is a 3/3 for B1. 3/3 for a 2 drop. The drawback to this card is that when a person plays a spell it gets -1/-1. It gets risky to play because a shock or any type of burn will kill it, but it is still a deterrent in early matters of the game.

s. I have played this match-up 25 time and won 17 times. That makes for a winning percentage of 68%. I’ll take that match-up any day.

White Weenie

White Weenie decks are still popular these days and can very easily swarm you in no time. The key to this match up is being able to stabilize the board as quick as possible. Generally they will be throwing down 2/2 creatures starting at least on turn 2, if not turn 1. They will be playing with Swords of Light and Shadow and Swords of Fire and Ice and these 2 cards pose the biggest threat to you, especially the Swords of Light and Shadow. Artifacts are the biggest pain for MBC since we have no real removal spells except for Cranial Extraction

. All in all MBC can deal with White Weenie. I have only played this match-up 11 times but I did win 8 of them (73% winning percentage).

I’m not saying MBC is the best deck out there, but it does win. So happy hunting and game playing. Feel free to respond back to this article at landdestroyer@gmail.com or you can find me on MTGO. My MTGO name is Stone Rain
