CardShark Content - Earl Burbridge (2/24/2002)

Hi, I'm Earl Burbridge, and I'm a Magic addict.

You know, of all the constructed formats, I enjoy block constructed the most. Block constructed is one of the least explored formats, until a PTQ season using it rolls around. It develops ideas that eventually create decks in Standard, and it USUALLY isn't a particularly expensive format.

I've been thinking about Odyssey Block Constructed for a while, and I'm thinking that, early on, it's going to be full of Psychatog

decks. There's going to be a lot of control running around, and there doesn't seem to be a beatdown deck that will handle it.

THAT lead me to thinking about the last time that a control deck was THE deck to play in block. Masques Block Constructed. Rising Waters

. It was an evil, evil, deck, early in the season, until a little, cheap, slightly cheesy deck appeared. Blue Skies.

Looking at Odyssey Block, there's a lot of the elements of Blue Skies sitting there, right in front of us. There's cheap, undercosted fliers, with drawbacks: the Thought fliers. There's bounce. LOTS of it. Aether Burst

in particular is good. There's deluge, which can slow the attack of an aggressive deck down a turn. In all, there's a LOT of good stuff to build on.

BUT... there just wasn't QUITE enough oomph in a straight blue deck. It just didn't have the kill, so I started searching for something that would get those last five or so points of damage through, and I found it. Reckless Charge

Some thoughts. Of course the thoughtguys are in there for the offense. Their drawback is NOT that bad, because, with the deck, one is MEANT to go into topdeck mode as soon as possible. The concentrates were good. They got the gas flowing again, when the deck hit a wall.

So, after some twiddling, the Looters came out, and two repulse and two more concentrates went into the deck. Right now, I'm thinking of pulling the Eaters for Skywing Aven

s, but I'm leery of not being able to use their ability late in the game, when it's most important to use.

The strategy of playing the deck is simply. Keep clearing the way for whatever flier you have out, pump it with Reckless Charge

when able, bounce any token creatures, and always hold the syncopate for something REALLY bad. The syncs CAN'T be wasted. They're there to save your butt.

Right now, one card seems to be the cause of almost all of the losses I have. Wild Mongrel

. I'm still thinking, looking for an answer for it.

So... any thoughts out there? Try the deck out. It's cheap, it's easy to build, and most of all, it's a blast to play. I'll keep updating you on the deck, and it's progress, as it goes.
