CardShark Content - Eric Lambert (6/17/2002)

Well, this is my first 'stab' at tourney reporting, which I generally find to be boring and tedious, but am determined to try. The event in question took place on June 7th 2002 at Big O's Collectibles in Morristown TN. Sixty-five people showed up that Friday competing for a first prize of an Unlimited Mox (of choice) and a box of any currently in-print booster packs, not bad for a local non-Qualifier, Trial tourney.

With Nationals wrapping up only days before, I like many others took well-rounded performers from that event to the competition. I chose to take Harvey's championship Squirrel Opposition

deck, not only because it was the best deck in my opinion, but also because it fits my style of play more so than most of the other decks. Here is a list, with my only changes coming in the Sideboard....

, played by a good player can be an absolute NIGHTMARE for this deck, and I knew of at least 4 people going to the tournament sporting a hefty 4-Deeds main deck, so it was a metagame call.
/start pathetic irony
Besides, aggro is dead, I won't see any R/G builds so who need the extra Herd and Leech?!? /end irony

He is a long time friend of mine and a very disciplined control player. However, all the skill in the world can't put land in your hand when you don't have it. He stalls on 2 land for 4 turns game 1 and on 3 lands for 2 turns on game 2. Both games were easy, and I find that my deck OWNZ mana screw =/

2-0 Games
1-0 Matches

Round 2
Ed 'Wurm' Fields - Deep Dog
Another good friend of mine (jeez I drove 60 miles to play people from my 'home store')
In game 1, I foolishly kept a 1 land hand because I was drawing first and had an Elf and Analysis in hand. Bad Mistake and beatings commence. Game 2 was an intense battle, with momentum swings teetering on each turn. However, Opp resolves in mid-game and I pull it out. Game 3 Ed keeps a sub-par hand, and suffers the manascrew fate as I easily win the game.

and elements of Trenches, really an unfocused deck, but with lots of firepower.
Game 1 is tight and he has me within Bolt + Rage range, which is never a good place to be, especially without counters, but I end up with a Nest and Opp out, and he SCOOPS!!! That's right, a deck with 50-60% instants and my life ever so low, he says 'I'm locked, let's go to game 2' I don't know what was in his hand, but I'll sure take the win. Game 2 is a similar situation, Gainsay

s go in to force my Nest/Opp through, which is ultimately what happens, and another easy (albeit a poorly played) game.

6-1 Games
3-0 Matches

Round 4
Brad Eubanks - Trenches
Like last round, I'm facing burn at instant speed, but with more focus and a better player guiding it. Game 1 is epic, taking 40 minutes of the allotted 55 minutes of the round. Ultimately, it comes down to this, he Bolts me at my eot, bringing me to 4 life. I have no counters in hand, so all he has to do is get a Bolt (2 were left in the deck) from that Bolt or draw one on his turn. He doesn't, and I have enough to swing for the win on my next turn. Very close, and very exciting. Game 2 I get a lock on quicker than Acme Door repair and cruise.

4-0 Matches

Round 5
Daniel Meadors - Deep Dog
Another guy from my 'home' store, who asks me to draw with him. I've had some rather draining matches, so I agree

4-0-1 Matches

Round 6
Laura Karem - Mirror Match
Another familiar face here. She decides to seek revenge for the limited points I (luckily) got off of her the last 2 pre-releases and return the favor via constructed. Umm, mirror goes like this....she resolves 5 Analysis (cast and flashback combined) in the 2 games, and I resolve 2 (both flashbacked, ow) Card Advantage is good here, she dominates me.

8-3 Games
4-1-1 Matches

Top 8 Round 1
Marsh Usary - Unique U/B build with Braids, Tog, Opp, and lots of other goodies
Due to my extremely conservative play, the games strrrrrrrrreeetch out for well over an hour, closer to 2 hours in fact, but I maintain control the entire match, and roll on.

10-3 Games
5-1-1 Matches

Round 2
Cecil Heath - Machine Head
I was VERY surprised to see this type of deck in the top 8, but it was a good metagame call, and flowed very nicely. Game 1 he DOMINATES me with a 3rd turn Specter (via Nightscape) and 4th turn Skizzik

. That, coupled with my land decking skills again the next turn, spelled the end of my tourney.

Here is why I am not a good deck builder:
Number of Deeds saw (or B/G at all for that matter)= 0
Number of times I wish I left that extra Leech= 2 (Games 2 and 3 of the Machine Head matchup)

All in all, it was a very successful tourney, and a very fun evening. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.
