TYPE FUN POINT FIVE - HEEDLESS FUN, DOUBTLESS FUN, GRIF-FUN CANYON

It's been a while since I last wrote, and there have been a number of issues come and gone since then that I figure I should sound off about. I think it's sort of an obligation to rant a bit, even though I'm a casual player. However, there's decklists farther down if you're not interested in my opinion.

* * *

Firstly, I'm very annoyed at all the Magic players who constantly complain about every single change to the game. I thought color-coding the expansion symbol to represent the card's rarity was a good idea. I thought the changes to the rules and the introduction of the stack was brillant and such an improvement that I can't even remember playing the old way. But I hate, hate, hate the new card design. And because so many people complained about those other things but still continued to buy the game, Wizards' attitude is ´´Hey, you'll get used to it.´´ Way to go, everyone. Way to ruin our credibility. Now they don't even listen when we say, ´´This is a bad idea, and will affect whether or not I buy your product.´´

I've studied graphic design. I can see what Wizards is doing, even without reading all of the analysis and justifications. The cards will be more readable, and more importantly will appeal to a younger audience. I'm not so bothered about that. However, they have changed my artifacts from the lovely brown antique color to a silver futuristic sci-fi color, and that upsets me. They have also changed the spidery titles to a blocky, bold font that doesn't look at all like Magic to me. I prefer the aging fantasy feel, and I don't want to play with this more modern Magick. I'm also willing to stop buying new cards to make my point.

Yes, that's right, I've decided I'm not going to buy anything made after Scour

ge. This decision doesn't hurt the game much as I play it, because there's so many old cards to draw from, but it does hurt Wizards of the Coast, however minutely. It's a shame, because they produced this fine game and continue to design excellent cards. However, a common way of thinking in the games business is that unless you are constantly bringing in new players, your customer base is shrinking. With Magic that's definitely true - once I've bought enough cards, I don't really have to buy any more to play the game. So I guess they expect to lose customers, and they have already written me off. They expected this decision to be unpopular, and why should I disappoint them?

For those players who don't mind the new design, good for you. I am impressed with your ability to adapt. I recognize that it's mostly a question of style, and perhaps I'm a little too closed-minded to appreciate the direction they're taking it. I hope that you continue to enjoy the new cards as much as the old.

* * *

My second point is this: cheating sucks. What else is there to say? When a shifty player gets caught, he or she gets punished harshly, both to set an example and to make up for the times that he or she didn't get caught. In social magic, that probably means you don't get invited back. No one wants to play with a cheater.

In my group's Type Fun.5 tournament format (described in more detail elsewhere on Cardshark), we have very informal punishments for errors, though we have never had to deal with cheating. In an attempt to codify these rules more clearly, I have prepared some more 'officially'-worded documentation.

PENALTIES

Raspberry - This is the lowest level of punishment. It is administered by placing the tongue between the lips and expelling air with enough force to cause the tongue to vibrate, making a harsh sound. The sound is directed at the offending player, who may or may not acknowledge it.

Rookie - The next level of punishment involves all other players calling the word ´´Rookie!´´ in a high-pitched voice, usually with a trill of the tongue on the 'R'. This is often accompanied by a mocking, pointing finger at the offending player. Shame and abashment should be subsequently evident.

Official Bad Guy (OBG) - A player who has been labeled 'Official Bad Guy' becomes the group's primary target. It is up to the group to remove that player as soon as possible. Attacking, casting spells or activating effects with unpleasant consequences which could affect the OBG but affect someone else instead receive an immediate Raspberry (even if the aggressor has a good reason).

Do-over (D-O) - All players reshuffle and begin again, and the offending player is considered Official Bad Guy. This is the worst penalty that can be assigned in an evening, although the most severe penalty of all is simply not playing with that person any more.

COMMON INFRACTIONS

Deck problems - When a player finds illegal cards, the illegal cards are removed from the deck. If a deck is found to have fewer than the minimum number of cards, basic lands are added to bring the total to the minimum. First offense is a Raspberry, followed by a Rookie, then an OBG and finally D-O.

Procedural Error, ´´Whoops...´´ - Small mistakes that don't rely on changes to the game state (such as having forgotten to untap something during the untap step) are simply applied as if they had not been forgotten. This is typically given only a Raspberry, even for repeat offenses, though this can escalate to Rookie and beyond if consistently abused.

Procedural Error, ´´Wait...´´ - Mistakes that involve choices or costs discovered after the appropriate phase or step has passed (such as whether or not to pay Echo during upkeep), or that come to light after the player's turn has passed, are awarded a Rookie penalty. An attempt is then made to correct the error, allowing the player to make necessary choices as needed.

Procedural Error, ´´What...?´´ - A mistake that seriously affects the game, causing mass confusion and making it impossible to restore the proper state, is given a Do-over penalty.

Cheating - Because of the social nature of the Fun.5 tournament, it is assumed that players have the integrity not to cheat, and thus that results that appear to be cheating are simply mistakes. However, to make up for the unfair advantage even inadvertent cheating can give, a mistaken player is considered OBG for the rest of the match. Blatant cheating is unthinkable; the penalty would be a D-O at the very least, and perhaps a long-term OBG penalty.

* * *

Finally, I'd like to talk about the tribal aspect of Magic, as it has begun to affect the Fun.5 metagame. I've won three matches in the past month or two, using almost entirely tribal-based decks. Our format doesn't have a sideboard, so I haven't had to deal with cards like Engineered Plague

, since they aren't usually placed in the maindeck. I think this makes tribal decks particularly strong in casual games. For example, take a look at my recent Elf deck.

Based on this rather limited case study, I think tribal decks are definitely a Good Thing in our format. I've decided to test this theory by building decks using really strange tribes for a while, to see how they do. Since Legions has been making a splash by being compared to Homelands at every opportunity, I thought I'd get nostalgic and pull out one of the original stupid tribes (second only to gorillas, I think, as goofiest race in Magic).

No, really, Minotaurs are cool! I must admit I associate them with ancient Crete and labyrinths more than Aboriginal instruments, but I'll take what I can get, and there's some very good Minotaur cards available, even if they've all got fairly expensive casting costs.

I decided my theme is bullying my opponents (pun intended--sorry about that) into leaving me alone, and to do that it uses three strategies: 1) endless minotaurs, 2) threat of damage, and 3) defensive manoeuvers. First, I need three mana-producing lands, which means I have to mulligan if I don't have them in my opening hand, and one them must be a mountain unless I have Didgeridoo
