CardShark Content - Erik Dahl (11/29/2002)

Type Fun Point Five is what play gaming group calls the tournament format we use to play Casual Magic. It's ideal for three to about five players, but we haven't tried it with more than that. I find it exciting and enjoyable, because the framework allows us a lot of different play styles. Here are the ´´official´´ rules as we play them.

Type ´´fun point five´´ (F.5) is a casual multiplayer tournament format, based on the Type 1.5 rules. Players must have 60+ card decks with no Type 1 restricted cards (Unglued and Portal are fine). They play in a free-for-all circle. Players may Paris mulligan all the way down to zero cards if they like, and can take one ´´do-over´´ mulligan if they reveal all land or no land. The winner of each round *must* play the same deck in the subsequent round, while other players may switch to different decks (usually decks better suited to beating the victor). If a single deck wins twice in a row, it is declared a champion deck. This means the winner gets to sign one of the cards, and that deck is not played again for the rest of the match.

My gaming group has found that Type F.5 gives us the most opportunities for everyone to have a good time. How do we know everyone's having a good time? We evaluate it based on a variation of the WotC Research & Development team's three Magic marketing categories: Timmy, Johnny and Spike. To summarize, Timmy likes to affect the environment, Johnny likes to be clever, and Spike likes to win. Since we play in a casual format, all of us are Johnnies, more or less. That stands to reason, since Johnny represents the segment of their market that plays for fun. However, there are several different kinds of Johnny, and since our group usually encompasses (at least) three of them, I can offer some insight into what each of these players wants, and therefore how each of us plays. If this isn't interesting to you, you can skip ahead to the match report below.

Still here? Great. The first variety of player, which I'll continue to call Johnny, enjoys making decks that follow a particular theme, or that center around an interesting combo. He's not much of a threat until he gets his cards in position, but once he does he is almost impossible to beat. He lays traps and politicks innocently. He has the most fun when the essence of his deck succeeds -- not necessarily just when he wins, but when it is his theme that leads him to victory. He is unhappy when his deck appears badly constructed, and even when he wins if his deck strategy was not apparent. He wants his deck to ´´work right.´´

The second kind of player has parts of Johnny and parts of Timmy. He likes clever decks, but he also has a need to affect the game in a big way. He wants to drop impressive cards and make other players sit up and take notice of him. He plays collections of cards that he really likes: big creatures, global effects, and wild cards. He often seems very random in his selection of opponents -- he attacks because he can. He has the most fun when he makes a big impression; achieving a new life total record or doing an incredible amount of damage makes him very happy. He is unhappy when he is ignored or locked down. Because he is a combination of Timmy and Johnny, we call this player Tony.

The third variety of casual player is Johnny with Spike's competitive streak. He enjoys building interesting decks, and likes being clever. More importantly, however, he wants to win. To that end, he will play with cards that do not necessarily fit the theme of the deck, but are more efficient. He seems to prefer ´´toolbox´´-style decks; he wants a variety of options in his cards so that he can foil any threat. He signals with his cards, and bristles at unprovoked attacks. It makes him unhappy when others ´´gang up´´ on him, or when he senses favoritism, because it goes against his sense of fair play. He enjoys winning despite difficult odds, especially because of one very good play. Spike and Johnny combine to make Spiny, a casual player who needs a sense of the metagame to gauge his success.

Obviously, each of us does not always conform to one play style. When reporting, I switch the names around depending on who is playing what kind of deck. I hope that this makes it easier to report on our matches, because I can refer to each of the players by a category name, and you, the reader, will have some idea of what each of us was doing and thinking in a given game, without having to know who we are, or the contents of all our decks.

Sealed game before we played our Constructed format. Each of us took five booster packs from our box of foil-wrapped packages and built a 40-card deck. I don't have decklists, unfortunately. We don't do this very often, and I'm not sure how Type Fun Point Five works with it, but it seemed to go well. We were anxious to get on with it and so we rushed the deck building a little.

As a side rant, though, I'll say that we haven't pulled very many exciting cards out of our box, and I think we've been pretty disappointed overall by how hard it is to find the rares and uncommons. I mean, if you buy a whole box, you should find at least one of all the good cards, right? Right? Well, that's what it felt like back when I bought a box of The Dark, anyway. I think the only things we've been really happy about finding were one Lightning Rift

, stalling things for three more rounds, and then attacked Johnny. There was a flurry of activity, and Tony's side of the table ended up pretty bare (though we kept saying how much we appreciated him actually doing something). I think Spiny eventually won that round because Johnny returned fire, wiping Tony out but leaving his own defenses down.

Game two was more interesting. Appropriately, both Johnny and Tony starting picking away at Spiny, until Johnny got an Overwhelm

-----

For the second part of the match, we switched to our standard F.5 Constructed format. This was a memorable night, as we actually had a deck win the champion title for the evening. I was playing a W/R/u thing that I like to call ´´Angel Snot´´ (as in: ´´that angel's not tapped´´). Since the deck is somewhat thematic, but my play style was more about abusing good cards than getting a particularly interesting set of cards into play, I'll be Spiny for this report.

, depending on which color I'm short. This is really annoying to one of our players, who feels that it is an utter cheese combo. He may be right, but as neither land is banned in 1.5, and since this is only the first time I've won the match with a deck that uses this method, I'm still not convinced that I won because of it. This will have to be watched in the future, since the switch-lands are the only place where we've considered differing from the DCI's restricted list.

. It was the first time I had won a match since we started playing Type Fun.5, but I didn't write anything obnoxious, just my signature and ´´we're number one!´´ or something like that.

-----

If you've never played anything like it, I really recommend you give Type F.5 a try. It's a casual format, but it really has something for everybody. There's a possibility for a clear winner and a prize, but all sorts of opportunities to show off deck ideas and wonky cards. The rules make it less likely to get abused by a particular deck, and the politics of a group dynamic make it harder to dominate the board. It's definitely a challenge to design a deck that will win two games in a row, where the second has everyone gunning for you with a tailored deck and there's no sideboarding.

Let me know what you think. I really appreciate your comments and emails, and I'll certainly respond to any ideas or suggestions you have. Here's my obligatory cheesy sign-off message: Fun Voy-age!
