A Fistful of Jank - Simic Science Lab - Evan Pringle (1/30/2014)

Wizards of the Coast was gearing up to release Return to Ravnica. They invited all DCI number-carrying players to pledge allegiance to one of the ten guilds. I had been on my break from Magic when the original Ravnica block shook up the way Magic players look at and think about Magic: the Gathering, so I was a blank slate when I read the descriptions of all the guilds – and read them all I did.

I made my decision to go Simic based solely on the guild description, as I hadn't seen any spoiled cards or mechanics. I don't think I even knew Simic was not going to be in the first set.

When the Simic cards for Gatecrash began to be spoiled, I felt I had chosen well. Now, I don't have a specific way in which I like to play; I like goofy combos, aggressive creatures and milling strategies with about the same amount of enthusiasm. But everything I was seeing in Simic was getting me excited to get my hands on the cards.

The Evolve mechanic resonated nicely with me as I've always been a fan of +1/+1 counters. And all the creatures and spells that interacted with those counters gave me some food for thought. Ooze Flux

in particular made my heart beat a little faster because it was about making a new creature and can be part of a goofy combo that interacts with the Evolve creatures. Fun stuff!

In competitive play, though, I haven't used the Simic cards all that much. As fun for me as it is to play, it doesn't hold up well against the metagame I was seeing.

After rotation, the pool of cards was much smaller and no longer contained anything from the Innistrad block (which I completely missed due to lack of funds at the time), so I decided to put together a deck with Simic cards I had and see how it did. Most importantly, I gave myself permission to lose; my intention was to play a Friday Night Magic tournament one moment at a time.

My first-round matchup was with Ray, who was piloting a mono-black devotion deck. I believe it was the same build that's been eating up tournaments all over. To put it bluntly, he trounced me.

Game 1 was the closer of the two, but I knew I was in trouble right off when his first play was to Thoughtseize

So, what did I learn about this deck? Well, I confirmed it is not good for tournament play, but I knew ahead of time this is more of a casual build. Its very open style may be indicative of not being focused enough. Most disappointing, though, is that by the time I get some interesting things happening, someone is low on life or my opponent simply concedes. Subsequently, I believe I shall rebuild this into an EDH deck, using Vorel of the Hull Clade
