Oh my gods! - Part 2

Welcome, planeswalkers!

With a new set coming into the Standard format, we always have a look at the decks that were already played in the format. Will they continue to see play without big changes or are there some nice additions to put in the lists that we already know?

The decks that were doing really well in the last season were Mono Black Devotion, Mono Blue Devotion, U/W Control and R/G Monsters. I think we can expect that we will face those decks frequently. With the release of Born of the Gods, one deck vanished from the tournament tables due to Bile Blight

: B/W Aggro Humans. I still like this build very much and now, with the right god on board, I think it has potential to rise from the ashes and shine brighter than ever.

Let's have a look at the god that can make this possible: Athreos, God of Passage

Indestructible As long as your devotion to white and black is less than seven, Athreos isn't a creature. Whenever another creature you own dies, return it to your hand unless target opponent pays 3 life.
.

We already know the devotion mechanic, now we have to put seven white or black mana symbols on the battlefield with the card to actually turn it into a 5/4 creature. This is significantly more work than having five mana symbols among our permanents in play, but Athreos himself already provides two, so we can get there.

His triggered ability is very suitable for an aggressive deck with a lot of creatures dying. We can return dying creatures to our hand unless our opponent pays three (!) life for them? This is the best thing ever!

The real best thing, of course, is his cost. We get this for only three mana. Rock 'n' Roll - if you don't believe me, look at his outfit!

The biggest issue for small aggressive decks is removal and creatures dying in combat. Athreos can turn this problem into a bonus for us, by forcing our opponent to either give us back the thing they just killed or paying precious points of their life total. The god of passage turns boardwipes into nightmares, removal spells into Lightning Bolt

With Athreos on the board, we get the 2/2 zombie and our opponent still loses the life or we get our card back to recast it. A board with Necromancer AND Athreos is the ultimate boardwipe protection if we have other stuff around. Even if our opponent has something like a Detention Sphere

We can play it for a single white mana (!) on our opponent's creatures to basically keep one creature from blocking if our opponent isn't ready for it. Our opponent is tapped out for playing that creature? Great! It's also good to prevent the use of activated abilities. can turn blocking AND attacking into a very pricy business for our opponent. Other than in Limited, every single one of our threats is important and since we want to flood the board with them, our opponents can't afford to sit back and pay the three mana for blocking without dying because they are behind on board. With a deck like this, I want to sling that spell all day long.

Don't forget that the white mana symbol counts to our devotion as well! I'm really excited to see what this deck can do.

I hope it's not too annoying that I'm writing about white weenie again, but Athreos is the card that can bring this deck back. So try it out and let me know how you did. Tweak the deck to your taste and start bashing! This is a good time to play an aggressive deck, I always enjoy it and make a face at the control players sitting across the table. Aggro players want excitement and this deck absolutely provides it.

You can reach me on Twitter, too and tell me how you did: @Florentine87

Until next time!
