Oh My Gods! pt 3 - Florentine Gruhn (8/27/2014)

Welcome, planeswalkers!!!

The new season is here and I bet you are digging through your collections as well as anyone to search for interesting decks, new angles and cool cards. I'll admit it, I like doing it the unorthodox way. I don't have much love for the top tier decks, also because I don't want to spend a huge amount of money.

I prefer to follow my play style and find a decent deck which is fun to play. I'm totally aware that these decks won't win me an FNM (which has a big field of very very good and experienced players) at my local store or a PTQ/PPTQ. For my part, I'm far too much of a greenhorn to make it into the top ranks yet, so how will a top tier deck help me? I'd rather play a less powerful deck that I know really well and that I can bring to its best performance.

So this time, we will focus on a deck that won't cost us half of our monthly income. The decks that I like are creature-based with a nice little something here or there. I like big creatures. Really big creatures. I am a fan of combat and winning big. I love to run things over. This is why we are focusing on a god card that didn't get quite the attention it deserves.

Have a look at Nylea, God of the Hunt

!

When this card was revealed, everyone seemed disappointed. Granting trample to other creatures didn't seem like an amazing ability for the 6/6 indestructible enchantment creature (with a devoted board). I think there are two things that have been overlooked by most people. First, trample isn't actually easy to access in the current format. You just don't get it on a lot of creatures! Second, green has a lot of very playable cards with many mana symbols on them, so it's actually very easy to achieve the five symbols on the board to bring Nylea to life. When our beefy creatures are bothered by little tokens or small deathtouchers, big mama will be there to push our team into walking over everything in their way.

The activated ability of the goddess isn't formidable, but pumping our creatures can be very important, especially with a lot of good burn in the format and the easy mana access that green can provide.

With the introduction of Born of the Gods, we got a card that I wanted to abuse immediately: Aspect of Hydra

The deck that I had in mind plays a lot of undercosted creatures with a LOT of mana symbols, such as Kalonian Tusker

The sideboard's structure is quite easy. The deck doesn't have to fear decks with smaller creatures too much, the Caryatid and the Tusker alone are putting a halt to very fast aggressive decks.

We really have to care about decks that use a lot of removal. Once I saw a deck tech on a large event and the guy was playing mono green with Mending Touch

in the side against removal-heavy decks. Since a lot of these decks have to keep the 1-for-1-balance to stay in the game, this is actually great! A boardwipe isn't that miserable if you can save your biggest or most important thing to keep up the pressure. Since we have to face the fact that we won't be able to devote the board to Nylea then, she should go out in those matchups. Another candidate to go in is my favorite boy ever, Ruric Thar, the Unbowed

Against other creature-heavy decks, the matchup is quite good and the sideboard decisions are very situational. Small, aggressive decks require Time to Feed

is a good way to refill your hand against decks that play singular big threats, so that you can find a spot to push through for only one or two points of damage that will give you one or two cards. I especially recommend this against decks using Domri Rade

There you go, folks! Have fun with the deck. Go and smash faces. Tweak it, share it, try it out to your taste. Let your inner Timmy out of his cage and let him show you how much fun it is to play big style.

The idea of this budget list was really fun, so my next article will be another budget build for those with a small wallet!

As always, I'm excited for every feedback!
