CardShark Content - Gareth Aye (7/12/2004)

in the past I’ve wrote several articles for Cardshark although, thus far, my ideas, statements, and decklists haven’t been strongly supported with playtesting. This article, however, will cover all of the decks in the current Mirrodin block metagame, my extensive playtesting in search for the perfect metagamed deck, sideboarding options, and analyses of each matchup and how they are to be won from either side of the board. Just this year I started playing seriously and I’ve had fairly decent results in constructed placing 5th at JSS in conjunction with a disqualification for improper deck registration after going 6-0 in the Swiss rounds and narrowly missing top eight at the Northeast Regionals, instead, placing in tenth and pushing my constructed rating up to an impressive 1779. Anyhow… with the upcoming PTQ season I’m sure all of you have been searching for the right deck to play to give yourselves the best shot at making an appearance at the upcoming Pro Tour Columbus and I hope this article will help you in making your deck decision as well as giving you some insight in reference to how the given deck should be played against the rest of the field.

Currently, in Mirrodin Block standard, the two format-defining decks are Ravager Affinity and Ironworks. When I say ‘defining’, I don’t mean ‘best’. Instead, Ravager Affinity and Ironworks, in theory, create the control decks. It is a principle of the game of magic. A control deck is only a control deck if what it does counteracts the defining decks of a given format. In this case, playtesting has revealed the decks capable of controlling Ravager Affinity and Ironworks are as follows;
- Big Red
- Mono Green
- Tooth and Nail

- Shard Control (U/G)
- U/W Control

When I started playing Mirrodin Block Constructed I decided right off the
bat that I, most definitely, didn’t want to be playing Ironworks or Ravager Affinity on the basis that there was too much artifact hate Affinity and Ironworks weren’t powerful enough to withstand all of the artifact hate in the format. Therefore the choice I was presented with looked something like this…”Which of the control decks best ‘controls’ Ravager and Ironworks while is capable of defeating the other control decks of the format?” My initial reaction, looking back at the results from PT Kobe, was that Big Red was the deck I was looking for…so I ended up playtesting the deck on Magic Workstation where I found that the deck had poor, if any, defenses against Tooth and Nail

s and that just made the Affinity and Ironworks matchups unfair in favor of the green deck. The Shard Control deck was a push over and against U/W control, their lack of mass removal left them vulnerable to your onslaught of colored creatures.
