CardShark Content - Gary Tang (6/9/2005)

I guess a proper introduction is necessary. If my name looks or sounds familiar, you may have seen my articles at www.londes.com. I’ve been playing Magic for a few years now, and I have Top 8 at PTQ’s twice while losing to out of Top 8 by Tie Breakers more times than I care to remember. Now I know what some of you readers may be thinking- Why do you want to write for Card Shark? Because I have more information to give out to the Magic Community, as each site can only print so much of what one person says. Since I still have more to say, I figure the best way to get this information out there is to write for another site while continuing my work there.

Some quick questions that may come up-

So who gets the better articles?

Both, I don’t plan to screw over the company I am employed by already nor do I plan to completely switch over. This is a job to supplement what I already earn and I write during my leisure time, so it’s not that big of a deal to just write more.

Won’t Londes.com care that you are writing for another site?

To be honest, I don’t know how they are going to act, but as I see it, I am just giving both Card Shark.com and londes.com more advertising. If I attract people here to go to the other site, then that’s just more business for them and vice versa so in fact everyone is a winner. But I would encourage for you to visit some of my older articles over there and I would encourage my Londes.com readers to come over here too.

Okay, so now that we got some of those pesky questions out of the way, I guess its time for me to start actually writing about a deck. The deck I wanted to write about for my first article here would be 5 Color Control. I first read an article Jon Erik Ariza, and one of the things I learned from writing was that instead of flaming about things on the boards, I should write a response article, and at least be constructive about it.

First of all, here is his article- www.cardshark.com/content/view_article.asp?article_id=3715 . It will be much easier for you to follow me if you know exactly what I am talking about as I write it.

Complaint 1- I don’t understand the land low count. 19 Lands? You have to be kidding me.

Complaint 2- Why is the deck 61 cards?

Complaint 3- Did he just throw a random pile of cards together and submit? It sure looks like it.

Complaint 4- Why so many one-ofs? Is there any consistency?

. It’s essentially Rinse and Repeat. It may seem to be really difficult but it is actually quite easy, it just takes practice to get used to. It’s a six mana lock with the color requirements of GGWB and then two colors of your choice. Don’t believe this can be done? Several Pros used this combo during Pro Tour Philadelphia to cruise past White Weenie decks and any aggressive decks for that matter. This strategy is fundamental against White Weenie, MGA and Medium Red.

, as this will set up infinite recursion. So it is your job to set up that recursion yourself. Once Witness and Shard is in the yard, you want to play All Sun’s Dawn to get back Witness. Witness gets you Shard, and then Shard let’s you have infinite recursion by bouncing back your own Witness. s and Arashi. Arashi is put in there to hose Mono Blue Control, taking out Meloku and friends. The hand you want to keep and mulligan aggressively for is Troll, Birds, and Two lands. Don’t feel bad to mulligan to 5 if you can get this hand or at least a hand with Birds and Trolls in it. You need it to set up Turn Two Troll. This is the most stable game plan against Mono Blue Control.

This is an easy matchup and hence the low amount of sideboard against it. You should be doing fine against it with your Wrath Lock and Haze Lock in Game One.

Parting Thoughts

I think that my deck is much more consistent than the deck offered before. I am uncomfortable with the 22 land count but I don’t want to play with more cards and there isn’t anything I can really cut. But this is smoothed over by Birds of Paradise

. Combined with Kodama’s Reach, you have several shuffle effects to fuel great Sensei looks and you can fix your mana to boot. Anyways I don’t think this deck is Tier One by any means, but I would be comfortable taking it to FNM.
