CardShark Content - George Humphries (2/9/2006)

Well this will be 2 firsts for me. This is my first PTQ and the first tournament report I have ever done for Cardshark. Let’s begin this thing.

First off, this was a Sealed tourney. The card registration went alright, but the cards I opened would at least make a decent deck for someone (the guy that got these cards quit after 3 rounds). As for the cards I received to design my deck, I tried at first for just two colors and could not get a great design. So I decided to go with three color: red, green white, green being the strong suit. After much thought and almost running out of time, I made it down to a 45 card deck as follows.

The rest of the card pool was just not strong enough to use or to support the deck. So I went in with this 45 card deck and it went okay. Out of 60 players and 6 rounds it went as follows:

Round 1:
Oh it was so good in the first game. I had him down to 2 to my 14 when BAM! He kills most of my stuff off and knocks me down and I finally lose even thought we both thought I had him that time. In the second game I dominated. My little guys, with the Hierarch and Phalanx boosting my life up, took his life total way down. Then my luck ran out. The third game was going great, but I could not get any of my life gain to show up. I was getting too much mana and we were staying neck and neck until he finally got a lucky break and hit for the final kill. First loss.

Round 2:
Poor guy never had a chance. I decimated him the first two games with my smaller creatures first, then followed by my heavy hitters. When the Wood-kin came out as an 8/8, he knew it was game over and so did I. First win.

Round 3:
Where’s the mana? Ouch! That was my first game, hand full of red and not a single red mana, while this guy is able to get out 5/5 flyers on turn 3 and then again on turn 4, with a 6/4 wurm. The second game: Where are the creatures? Ouch again! I had a hand full of enchantments, instants, and sorceries, but no creatures of any use until turn 5 when I get the fifth land out, and he again has his 5/5 fliers on turn 3. I don’t even see my Elvish Skysweeper

or either bird the entire game, and he sweeps my life away quickly, ouch. 2nd loss

Round 4:
Mirror match. It goes well in the first game. We stay neck and neck, but he finally gets a lucky Helix and attacks, using a haste enhanced Trumpeter to take out one blocker and a War Torch to kill the other and makes the final hit. Game 2 went well, staying neck and neck again, but I got him that time. During Game 3, on the last of the Five Turns after time is called, he gets a lucky break and hits me for 8 and wins the last match (ouch). 3rd Loss

Round 5:
Honestly tired and frustrated, I made a few mistakes but I never quit. And I was still having a great time. I lost the first game after seeing no life gain (how?) and barely holding on. Now the second game I decimated him hitting quickly with the Swiftblade, Guildmage, and a few other smaller guys till the Wurm comes and decimates his last attempt. Game 3: ARRGGG, where is the mana? I have hand full of green and not a single forest, the Mana Gods must hate me today. Needless to say, another loss.

Round 6 (final round):
Well now in the bottom of the lists I still decide to see if I can raise myself up a bit. In the first game, the mana gods are still out to get me with 1 Plains

, and the Skarrg as my only mana for 90% of the game. So I barely got anything out in time to help myself and somehow still got him down to 10 before I died. In the second game I just came back and decimated him 29 to 0. The third game saw us staying neck and neck until he pulls out the Ghosts of the Innocent

, who reduces all damage by half rounded down. Well, needless to say, this brings the game to a halt. The Ghosts are 4/5, plus he had a 4/7 and a 2/1 to back it up. Well this doesn’t make it by the time they called time, and I have him down 10 to 15. After the 5th turn is done, we still have the same life totals so it becomes a draw.

So my day ended as a 1-4-1, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it and had a great time. I suggest even the most casual player should get out and try it. You might be a lot better than you think, plus a lot of trading and meeting other players goes on. I hope you all enjoyed this report and please contact me with any suggestions for how to better myself at making these reports and any deck-building suggestions for this event too. Thanks again.
