Enchanting Angels - Greg Gawura (11/29/2009)

´´Sing the anthem of the angels
And say your last goodbye.´´
-Breaking Benjamin

As a reminder, all my decks are built for casual vintage multiplayer, but this deck has been successful in duels.

The deck I will discuss today is my Enchantress Deck, which I call “Enchanting Angels.” This deck has become a staple of my rotation and has gone through many changes since its inception. I’ll admit, it started as a near copy of the Building on a Budget deck by Ben Bleiweiss called “The Two Ladies.” The premise of Ben’s deck was to use the Verduran Enchantress

. She costs one less and has shroud! Too bad a playset might out cost the rest of the deck. Another potential move would be to use Enchantress’s Presence, which is itself an enchantment. Most playgroups will run substantially more creature removal than enchantment removal, so Enchantress’s Presence should be safer than the Enchantress herself.

With these two mana accelerators, a turn three Sigil is a good possibility.

The last two cards are meant to address the two major problems with this deck. First, why do most tournament players scoff at auras? I’ll take “Card Disadvantage” for 100 Alex. It really hurts to target a creature with an aura, only to have that creature destroyed in response. Losing two cards for your opponents one is the epitome of card disadvantage. How to we help remedy this problem? With my favorite non-keyworded ability: Troll Shroud.

(The starred cards did not appear in Ben Bleiweiss’ original Building on a Budget deck)

As with all my decks, the mana base is the area that can be most improved. Obviously, cards like Temple Garden

, would greatly improve the mana base. Also, I never seem to be mana screwed, but using only 20 lands is really pushing my luck. Another area of improvement could be removal. Maybe the deck is due for a few Journeys to Nowhere from Zendikar. When it comes to removing creatures, they would play exactly the same as the Oblivion Ring

s, but cost one less. Too bad it can’t deal with planeswalkers (or artifacts and enchantments, for that matter). Also, note that there are no sorceries or instants in this deck. I really drove hard on the enchantment theme.

Let’s finish up with how the deck plays. Typically, my strategy is to accelerate into the Sigil as fast as possible. A great start would be:

) and five 4/4 flying angel tokens (too bad they have summoning sickness). Note that you don’t even need the enchantresses to “go off,” but you may need them to draw into the pieces. It is almost never a bad idea to play an enchantress early.

So, there’s my enchantress deck. Thank you for reading my article and sorry if I took the car analogy too far.
