Goblin Kin - An Atypical Goblin Deck - Greg Gawura (2/17/2010)

“Your unpleasant family,
How vile they are”
-Porcupine Tree

Every once and a while, the Johnny side of me kicks into high gear and I am possessed to build a really strange deck. This deck certainly fits into that category. I’ll preface this article by mentioning that this deck is extremely budget (I priced out the deck on Cardshark at ~$5.40 for all the cards excluding basic lands) and admittedly underpowered (especially in Vintage), but gosh darn it, it is fun to play.

The original inspiration for this deck was my desire to build a Kinship deck. If you don’t already know, Kinship is creature ability that says essentially, “at the beginning of your upkeep, if the top card of your library shares a creature type with [Cardname], [Ability] triggers.” The ability is different for each creature, and tends to fit the flavor of that creature’s tribe/color. A quick Gatherer search reveals 12 creatures with the Kinship ability. Now, every Magic player has their own style, and my style points to the Sensation Gorger

will be the basis of my Goblin Kin deck and is discussed in detail later. It’s hard to claim a deck fits a Kinship theme if only one creature has Kinship, though, so I’ll also be adding the synergistic Squeaking Pie Grubfellows

. Based on these two cards, it looks like we will have a Black/Red Goblin/Shaman deck. Also, I never want to build a “typical” deck, so I will follow the road less traveled (cliché enough?). Specifically, this won’t be a Goblin Lackey

Kinship - At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Sensation Gorger, you may reveal it. If you do, each player discards his or her hand and draws four cards.
- I’ll start by saying that this card has some of the weirdest art in all of Magic. I understand that the creature is “gorging on sensations”, with the ear horns, finger feelers, Clockwork Orange looking eye speculum, the skunk on his head, and all, but it’s just plain creepy. Creepiness aside, it’s a pretty cool card. A 2/2 for three mana isn’t terrible, but its Kinship ability is where the power is. Let’s look at the first half of the ability, “each player discards his or her hand.” It’s always nice to see your opponents drop their hands, but the drawback is you have to drop your hand too. Wait. Most goblin decks are already in top-deck mode by turn four (the probable first triggering of the Gorger’s Kinship ability) anyway, so you won’t even have a hand to lose. The second half of the ability, “and draws four cards,” is a great way to replenish your hand and keeps your opponents’ hands ripe for some discard damage (I’ll talk about that later).

Kinship - At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Squeaking Pie Grubfellows, you may reveal it. If you do, each opponent discards a card.
- Here is another goblin/shaman Kinship creature that forces your opponents to discard. It fits with the theme and can trigger more Kinship if it’s the top card of you library. Note that since the Kinship ability does not change the top card of you library (i.e. you don’t have the option to draw it, put it on the bottom of your library, put it in your graveyard, or anywhere else), it merely reveals it. That is important if you have more than one Kinship creature in play, because even though the Kinship abilities trigger separately, they all see the same card (unless anyone has instant speed draw/mill). Also, make sure you stack the Kinship effects so that the Grubfellows trigger last, as your opponents will end up with three (or less) cards instead of four.

If you get on a roll with these Kinship abilities, your opponents will be discarding a lot of cards. Hmm, what card turns those discards into damage?

So, it takes either a goblin or shaman to trigger the Kinship abilities, so let’s go get some. Since there is only one Tribal - Shaman card (excluding Changelings), the majority of the remaining cards will be Goblins.

has the added benefit of a nearly guaranteed Kinship trigger in your next upkeep. Another Kinship note: The Kinship ability resolves before your draw step, so you would still get to keep the card you searched out with the Harbinger after the Gorger’s ability resolves.

s, but then it would be a discard deck, not a Goblin Kinship deck. On top of that, discard (like land destruction) tends to make the game un-fun for your opponents. It wouldn’t surprise me if land destruction decks have ended friendships, and that’s not what I’m looking for in my Magic games. I want my decks to be fun to play and fun to play against.

You may also notice that I omitted the third goblin card with Kinship, the Mudbutton Clanger

) and simply doesn’t “feel” right in the deck. To add a card simply to fit the theme never makes deckbuilding sense.

As for the strategy of the deck, here it goes. Since my playgroup has many powerful vintage decks, this deck is frequently unsuccessful alone, but is nearly unstoppable when paired with straight burn in Two-Headed Giant. In some ways, this deck has a control-like feel, but don’t let that fool you (I mean, these are Goblins). Play your cards as fast as you can and swing with your creatures. Every little bit of damage will help, especially with the Megrim

, someone will invariably kill him before my next upkeep. The more players there are, the more likely this is to happen. If all else fails, try to form an alliance with a mono-red burn deck, as they like the card drawing from the Gorgers. Most of the hate will come from control players, as they want to hold on to their answers.

Well, there’s my strange, yet fun to play, Goblin Kinship deck. Feel free to add your Kinship decks to the forum page for this article, as they would be fun to see.
