Symmetry – “Reborn”
I am a full-fledged Johnny that loves to build decks around cards that others tend to dismiss as “junk.” As a form of sadistic retribution, I enjoy defeating opponents with said “junk.” This article will be the first in a series where I design decks around many of my favorite junk rares. I hope my efforts will inspire you to look at your pile of 25 cent rares for some true diamonds within the junk.
Please keep three things in mind when reading my articles. First, the decks I design are not intended to be tournament decks. Though my decks typically fall squarely in the “casual” realm, I have been known to take down tier one tournament decks from time to time. Second, I am solidly a “budget” deckbuilder. Most of the cards I play are less than $5 and are usually very easy to acquire. Third, in order to impose some limitations on the available cards, most of the decks presented in the JunktrollerJunktroller

The first deck I will present is based around a “junk rare” from New Phyrexia: Fresh MeatFresh Meat

. As someone who watches opponents play “wrath effects” on a frequent basis, I find replacing my lost creatures immediately extremely appealing. Obviously, the main focus of the deck will be to amass a large number of expendable creatures (we’ll get to that later). There is one major issue, however, and that is we can’t reasonably assume that our opponent will always have some board-sweeper. We need to not only ensure that our creatures will die (hey, that’s a word now), but that they will die when is most advantageous to us.
One possible solution is to include a number of sacrifice effects, like Greater GargadonGreater Gargadon

was especially enticing since it let you sacrifice your creatures at will while helping replace them later. Unfortunately, any deck that has two distinct plans (one to make the creatures and another to sacrifice them) is doomed to have consistency problems. We’ve all been there: you draw all of your ramp but none of your win conditions or all of your auras but none of your creatures. It’s frustrating.
So, how can we both consistently create creatures and consistently find ways to sacrifice them? The answer was painfully obvious: Eldrazi Spawn Tokens. Who needs a Spawning PitSpawning Pit

when the Eldrazi Spawn can just sacrifice themselves?
So, with the base of our deck set, let’s decide what color(s) are going to support the green Fresh MeatFresh Meat

. A quick search reveals that there are only three colors (colorless is not a color) that provide Eldrazi Spawn Tokens: Black, Red, and Green. Each color has four apiece. The four in black happen to be the least attractive for our plan. Three of the cards are too high on the mana curve at five and six mana, while Pawn of UlamogPawn of Ulamog

does not provide tokens immediately. With the lack of black cards that fit our theme, our colors are essentially set at red and green. Here are the cards that I chose for the deck.

is a very efficient creature. At only two mana, it comes in early. It’s a 2/2 for two (i.e. a “bear”) that brings an additional body along. Kozilek’s Predator – Rounding out our green Eldrazi Spawn suite is maybe the best Spawn generator, Kozilek’s Predator. It’s a 3/3 for four that brings along two additional bodies. Usually, this guy is bringing along my fifth and sixth spawns, which typically wins the game on my next turn.
