Symmetry

Many people label Johnnies as “combo players.” I tend to disagree, but this article will do nothing to dispel the combo player stereotype. I love a good combo as much as the next guy, so the intent of this article is to discuss some infinite combos and ways to build around them. Many of these combos are pretty well known to seasoned Magic players, but they can lead to fun discussions and powerful decks. I tried to use combos that were as simple as possible (i.e. combos that do not require six cards and an encyclopedic knowledge of Magic rules) and that were relatively inexpensive (Grindstone

is, by far, the most expensive card in the list). I’ll add that I have played with or against all but a couple of these combos. So, here is a look at ten infinite combos.

+ Painter’s Servant
This is one of the more famous combos to show up recently. The combo works by using the Servant to make all cards (including those in everyone’s libraries) a chosen color and then using the Grindstone

to mill an entire library in a single blow. I see two directions to go with this combo. The first would be to build a dedicated milling deck with maybe Grinding Station

as an unexpected (as unexpected as this combo can be) alternate win condition. Since the latter idea is specifically built around a piece of the combo (the milling deck can easily run without the combo pieces), let’s build around the Servant.

Since the Servant is an important piece of the puzzle, we need some ways to find it. I see cards like Fabricate

to generate infinite elemental tokens. It works by attaching the Mastery, which allows the enchanted creature to tap for a number of 1/1 Elemental Creature Tokens, to the Legionnaire, which untaps whenever another creature enters the battlefield. It’s an easy infinite combo. Now, I see two obvious deckbuilding routes: a R/W Boros soldier deck or a R/W elemental deck. I like both, but the elemental deck sounds like more fun. Please feel free to add some of your favorite combo decks (they don’t have to be infinite combos) to the forum page for this article, especially if you have decks built around any of the above combos. I’d love to see some of your ideas.
