CardShark Content - JP (4/30/2004)

Welcome back for the third article in the series. If you have been fallowing it you know that the tournament is well underway with a fair share of upsets and dominations. In this article I will break down the Quarter and Semi finals, all leading up to the final article in which the final match will be covered. So far the bracket looks like this:

#1 Ravager Affinity (2-0) VS.
#8 Untouchable (2-0)

#12 Burn (2-0) VS.
#13 Equipment (2-1) VS.

#3 Goblin (2-0) VS.
#11 Myr (2-0)

#10 Suicide Black (2-0) VS.

The fallowing is the match summaries for the games mentioned. Afterwards the semi-finals will be summarized.

#1 RAVAGER AFFINITY (2-0) VS. #8 UNTOUCHABLE (2-0)

As you know by reading the first two articles, raffinity will open this match. This was a very close match, although Untouchable never managed to deal any damage to raffinity, it was one turn away from the Phage = Whispersilk cloak combo. A good draw in which raffinity got a few ornithopters and a ravager jump-started the match, however it needs to be said that if untouchable had gone first it would have won. Which is the case for game two, in which Untouchable got to go first. A great first turn for the raffinity gave Untouchable a scare, but raffinity never got out its win condition, Arcbound Ravager

. A few shrapnel blasts did some damage, but fireshrieker equipped dauthi slayers simply mangled ravager affinity. In game three, raffinity started the fun. Game three was an epic clash. Many “in response to” moves and direct damage got fired at each other. The Ravager came out on turn 2 but was never able to get the boost it needed. Because Untouchable had so many creatures out and the dross golems were coming out for free, raffinity couldn’t sac everything because it needed mana to do something about the creatures. Eventually Phage came out and a whispersilk was waiting. In a last effort to win raffinity saced everything and made the Ravager an 11/11 and attacked. However Untouchable had 12 life, and next turn phage attacked, unblocked, and won the game. Untouchable escapes and advances at (4-1).

#12 BURN (2-0) VS. #13 EQUIPMENT (2-1)

Burn started things, giving it the advantage right away. However this was the closest match of the tournament. It would have been a massacre if not for a well-timed Shatterstorm

shut down Equipment. A hiccup allowed Equipment to deal some damage but it didn’t matter in the end. Burn advances at (4-1).

#3 GOBLIN (2-0) VS. #11 MYR (2-0)

Goblin went first and Myr was already scared as it drew its first hand. This turned out to be a great match, which came as a shocker. Goblin simply got mana screwed, however it showed its power by reducing Myr to 2 life on just 2 mountains. Myr however got the third turn Urza

tron as well as 2 extra towers and a cloudpost. Goblin just got run over. So they opened the second game as well. This time it was the same outcome with a different story. The goblins were everywhere but for every goblin there was a myr, but some of the myr’s had trample so the goblins were trading off with the myrs but the lodestone myrs were still dealing damage. #2 COUNTERSPELL (2-0) VS. #10 SUICIDE BLACK (2-0)

Well counterspell began this match, and the extra mana kept it in the game early. Sui-Black came out to a roaring start and it appeared it was to fast for counterspell. Unfortunately for Sui-Black, Counterspell

. As the shades came out uncountered, Sui lost need to even cast spells as it just pumped up the shade every turn rather then cast spells. So a decisive game 3 begins as counterspell goes first. #8 Untouchable (4-1) VS. #12 Burn (4-1)

Untouchable went first, a trait that has proved it well in this tournament. This match started out a very clear domination on Burn’s part. Pyroclasm
